Notes on reading The author relates stories of her experience, but it's all very one-note, there is no reflection, no depth, but maybe that's to come. So far the only interesting bits are on how nice the Aluthor finds the travelling community although beyond saying that the men are very respectful (to the nurses at least) and their caravans are very clean, I don't know how this is supposed to change the public perception of them. This amazing story is based on factual event. It begins with a midwife taking care of her ladies in the difficult days of WW2 in Poland. This courageous lady refuses to let her Jewish clients give birth alone and knows the great risks she is taking. One evening she is called out during the night to a Jewish mother and well, it doesn't end well for anyone involved and leads to Emilia being sent to Auschwitz. Soraya describes the brutality of it all. She shares the emotional lows in a way which leaves us with no doubt who is to blame for the cruelty and the violence. The first half of this non-fiction recount of a midwife in the NHS system is uplifting, emotional, entertaining, and funny. The author revisits the highs and lows of her early career in midwifery, where relationships and care are the norm with patients.
The hospital management told us we could rely on this equipment, but would this little mask protect me? Was I putting myself and my family at risk? I called the woman and asked who was inside. She said it was her mum and dad, aunt, sister and her partner’s sister – people from four households. The horror of what Emilia sees breaks her heart, but she is determined, especially with the assistance of Alesky and Lena to continue to save others.

To be there at the moment a mother gives birth is the most amazing experience and I never get tired of it,’ she says. ‘It’s an honour and I’m so proud to call myself a midwife.’ When Emilia is taken prisoner in 1942 in her homeland of Poland she is sent to Auschwitz for helping Jewish mothers deliver their babies and working for The Resistance, what she discovers here is atrocious and appalling, but it makes Emilia determined to help as many as she can as a midwife. Putting on some fresh clothes, I went downstairs, took the plastic box with my dirty clothes, pulled on elbow-length gloves and loaded the clothes into the washing machine before spraying the gloves with a bleach solution and sanitising my hands one last time. A stunningly written heartbreaking tale about the lives and experiences of characters who endured the horrors of Auschwitz. I really didn't know much about what being a midwife really means. I had no idea of the pressure and strain midwifes face every day. There Emilia is put to work assisting mothers delivers babies. She meets Doctor Alesky who helps train Emilia to save woman and their babies. The author did a great job of providing a window into this brutal history, and am empathetic look at what many suffered through. It was a tough but worthwhile read. Strongest advocate, best friend, expert, cheerleader and chief photographer . . . Before, during and after labour the role of a midwife is second to none. The Secret Midwifereveals the highs and lows on the frontline of the maternity unit, from the mother who tries to give herself a DIY caesarean to the baby born into witness protection, and from surprise infants that arrive down toilets to ones that turn up in the lift.
