Higher Beings - The afficated cannot hurt or kill higher beings, such as Demons, Angels, The Anti-Christ and Deities. The latter part of the book when they battle the Orphan Master! Holy crap, that was just one big rollercoaster and I was totally curled up in my bed, hoping that both these characters would be fine. Leo especially goes through a lot and I was just so worried and stressed out! I know she is the MC and this is a children’s books, but you never know these days! OMG! Coffee house Caffè Nero has announced the 16-strong shortlist for the inaugural Nero Book Awards, recognising the outstanding books of the past 12... The first Manual was written in a time that has been swept away by history, before even your oldest teacher was born. But many years before the Manual even existed, before it was ink on paper, there was a girl who already knew these vampire-killing methods very well indeed. There are highs and lows to being a vampire. On one claw, you get cool powers like beastly strength and hypnotism and the ability to GRIMWALK. On the other claw, however, vampires are bound by the Vampiric Laws: rules to protect the balance between the worlds of the Living and the Undead. And unfortunately, 11-year-old Leo has just forgotten rule number one . . . The Rules for Vampires don't tell you what to do when you make a ghostly enemy, or accidentally restart an ancient war. But Leo and her very unusual family are more than up to the job.

This book is a funny take on what it is like to be a real-life vampire and all the good and bad things that go with it! If you like comedy, thrills and suspense then you will definitely like this book as it has strong characters and a good plot throughout! Summary: A darkly funny debut novel detailing the trials and tribulations of being a young vampire and the blossoming friendship between two ancient enemies. So whilst her mother is away at a vampire council, Leo sets off for Otto’s End to bag herself a human. She heads for St Frieda’s Home for Unfortunate Children and all goes well until she meets the Orphanmaster. Then Leo accidentally sets fire to the orphanage, creating two ghosts – one friendly, one most definitely not. Legendary Resistance (3/Day). If the vampire fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.Blood Diet - The afflicted have human-like physiology, and their bodies continue to function normally as long as they have a steady diet of fresh human blood. Though capable of eating normal food as well, it does not sustain their life or provide nutrition in the same way, and deprivation of blood for an extended period of time will cause the afflicted to become rachitic creatures, similar to living mummies; [5] [3] [4] Additionally, they will experience symptoms akin to a high fever, [2] and will grow increasingly ravenous until able to slake their thirst. Blood from deceased or diseased people can be very dangerous to them, [7] and is described as having a vile taste. Due to their acute senses, the blood of a human who has recently consumed drugs or alcohol can leave an afflicted with the aftereffects. A vampire hunter’s weapon of choice had to be the stake. The crucifix and the garlic and the silver were nice—they were useful for weakening a vampiric foe—but the pointed spike, whittled sharp, was essential. Leo is an 11-year-old vampire – a hundred and eleven that is! Now she has reached that age she needs to complete the Hunt of the Waxing Moon on her birthnight and ‘eat’ her first person. Her vampire family, the Von Mottebergs, have high expectations of her, especially as her mother, Sieglinde, is an extremely old and powerful vampire. I love that there is something like a birthnight and that one one particular one you have to do a big Hunt. I was definitely rooting for Leo! Plus, I totally agreed with several characters near the end on the outcome of the Hunt. I won’t spoil anything, but it made me smile.

After one hundred years of being a vampire, it’s time for Eleonora to have her Birthnight. Since Leo’s last rite of passage, her Grimwalk, ended with her losing her right leg and a good deal of her confidence, she’s hoping to redeem herself in the eyes of her mother, the fearsome Lady Sieglinde. All Leo has to do is hunt down and kill her first prey, and she already has the perfect plan. After all, who will miss an orphan from the bleak St. Frieda’s Home for Unwanted Children? Enhanced Senses - The afflicted are naturally superior to humans in almost every way, possessed of otherworldly senses which allow them to easily overcome mortals: A vampire and a ghost being friends is unheard of. It makes no sense. The two factions have despised one another for all eternity. But Leo the vampire and Minna the ghost have battled together side-by-side, they're sisters-in-arms, they're best friends, and they'll have to work together to vanquish a new, deadly threat. Summoned to the Ghostly Realm for the murder of the Orphanmaster, Leo must complete three tasks to prove herself worthy of her unlife, each more treacherous than the last. Can Leo convince the Ghostly Realm of her innocence and earn her freedom, or will she be trapped there forever?Summoned to the Ghostly Realm for the murder of the Orphanmaster, Leo must complete three tasks to prove herself worthy of her unlife, each more treacherous than the last. Can Leo convince the Ghostly Realm of her innocence and earn her freedom, or will she be trapped there forever? Fans of fast-paced, well-written gothic romps will devour Rules for Vampires.' Phil Earle, bestselling author of When the Sky Falls

Despite her sympathy for Lord Ayman—or what was left of him—Leo couldn’t help but feel sorry for herself too. Was Sieglinde really going to miss Leo’s special night? Leo is caught in a maelstrom of worry. If Mum finds out she not only didn’t take her first bite, but has made friends with Vampires’ worst enemy – a ghost, she will be toast. Emmeline is being particularly nasty, and Minna is piling on the guilt factor. Leo is torn between family duties, guilt and worry her secret will be discovered. Conversion - The afflicted are able to spread their supernatural virus onto human beings by letting humans drink some of their blood, therefore transforming these humans into the afflicted. This summons is for the murder of the Orphan Master, who was only a ghost for a few seconds, but ghost laws still apply. If she doesn't attend the trial, the threat of a ghost / vampire war is laid out clearly before her. What to do?At first I thought it would be a really boring and it was a bunch of rules for vampires no adventure or anything. But as I got in the story it was like I was in the book myself. It is a vibrant world-building, hilarious story of a ghost and a vampire killing another ghost which I thought wasn't possible myself. Alex Foulkes' book tells me that not all vampires or ghosts are mean and scary some can be kind and caring. My favorite character is Mina with her tough attitude and strong personality it makes me like her very much. Author Anna Kemp introduces The Hollow Hills, the sequel to her dark magical tale, Into Goblyn Wood. Vibrant world-building, hilarious horror happenings, and splendidly quirky characters - Alex Foulkes’ debut, Rules for Vampires (the first in a series), has plenty for adventure-loving 9+ year-olds to sink their teeth into, a devour-in-one-bloodthirsty-sitting story that’s made even more engaging by Sara Ogilvie’s cleverly comic illustrations.
