The Riley RS1 has a 350W motor that allows the scooter to reach speeds of up to 25km/h, and I found the RS1 did this with ease, potentially due to it weighing in at a lightweight 13kg. Additionally I thought the thumb-activated throttle input was responsive and didn’t have any frustrating lag. The Kirin has both front and rear LED lights, and the front is surprisingly bright. It lit up the path I was testing it on at Kingsbury Water Park in the Midlands, but I was much more cautious than when using the scooter in pure daylight. I found you could really carry speed through corners, and not have any fear of losing grip or slipping. It’s very easy to get tied up in motor this, wattage that, an often overlooked element of performance is the tyres. The Riley RS1 has 10” pneumatic tyres that provide plenty of grip and help smooth out imperfections of the road surface. I’m not a fan of honeycomb or solid tyres, and at Electroheads we think that the bigger wheels are significantly safer and better all-round. I find cruise control is really useful when gliding in a straight line, and really miss it when it's not on other electric scooters. In addition, high-quality gadgets and technology products tend to have better performance. The front wheel houses a 350W hub motor which is capable of running at a not-inconsiderate 700W peak power at maximum throttle. This means a top speed of about 15.5 mph (25kph) can be reached which is more than enough for me – I was getting the jitters at around 10mph! The top speed is software limited, and you are likely to void the one-year warranty if any attempts at modifying this are made. Rear brake is a mechanical disk system which provides reasonably good stopping power, in conjunction with regenerative E-ABS braking from the motor. No complaints there. Let there be Light! Other than that, I found acceleration was very smooth and the ride comfortable, with the 10in pneumatic tyres doing a good job of gliding over bumps in the road. The scooter’s 350W motor is best experienced in Sports mode, which makes a huge difference when accelerating from standstill and climbing hills. For example, I could climb up small hills easily in Sports mode, but found the scooter came to a gradual halt when going up the same hills in Normal mode. Acceleration is brisk and almost silent. You can hear a slight electrical whirr of the motor, but it’s not intrusive. Soon you’re feeling the wind through your hair (or scalp in my case!). It’s a wonderful feeling. The big 10” tyres have excellent grip and I was never worried about slipping around corners, even in damp conditions. When it comes to range, the Riley RS1 offers up to 15 miles which isn’t a headline stat, but it does offer more than enough for daily or weekly riding. If I was riding this every day, I’d have no issue in completing my journey and charging it up in time for my next trip – for comparison it offers similar range stats to the 8TEV B12 Proxi, which is more than double the price.
Yet again, it’s important to make clear that electric scooters are classified as Personal Light Electric Vehicles (PLEVs) in the UK and are therefore illegal to use unless you ride on private land with the landowner’s permission or as part of an authorised rental scheme. A range of >15 miles is not uncommon which can cover a decent loop in an hour or two with a pint en route! But remember people – it’s best not to get drunk as a skunk and then scoot! It’s easy to describe every electric scooter as ‘nippy’ but I really enjoyed the direct power deployment of the RS1 as I applied the throttle – it made me want to keep on riding, and also gave me the confidence getting going from a standstill. This allows you to easily carry it up stairs or through a train station, and at 13kg it's one of the lightest options on the market, although it's still important to remember that it will take some effort, depending on your strength level.
