About this deal

Optically, the lens is comprised of 12 elements in 8 groups, two of which are extra-low dispersion (ED) elements. Nikon did not incorporate any aspherical lens elements into the design, because they are known to negatively impact the lens’ bokeh performance. The Nikon Z 85mm f/1.8 S is coated with both Nano Crystal Coat and Super Integrated Coating to reduce ghosting and flare. There are nine rounded aperture blades, and the lens is fully weather-sealed, similar to other Nikon Z S primes. NIKON Z 7 + NIKKOR Z 85mm f/1.8 S @ 85mm, ISO 200, 1/2000, f/2.8 The Nikon 85mm f/1.8 AF-D has no visible or measurable distortion at any distance. Whatever it may be, it's less than what would take a factor of ±0.1 in Photoshop's

Here are crops from the center of 100% FX 12MP (D3 or D700) images, focused on a reference phase lattice at 3 meters (10 feet) with synthetic reference vegetation at 15 meters (50 feet). Printed full-image at this size, these would be about 42 x 28" (105 x 70cm) prints, at least as seen on most 100 DPI computer monitors: Hint: the included HN-23 metal hood screws into the lens' 62mm threads. The front of the hood has no threads, however any of the Nikon snap-on 77mm plastic lens caps pop right on the front of the hood. If you don't change filters, you could leave the hood on all the time and use a 77mm cap! If you want to get real close to take wedding detail shots or for any kind of macro work, this is not the lens for that. The very best protective filter is the Hoya multicoated HD3 67mm UV which uses hardened glass and repels dirt and fingerprints. The Nikon 85mm f/1.8 AF-S G is made to good consumer standards in China. The 85mm f/1.8 AF-D is much better mechanically. It’s almost non-existent as lateral color fringing – the longitudinal type (fringing behind and in front of the focused point of an image) is where you see it. It basically results in purple weirdness in high contrast areas of your pictures and shouldn’t actually be there. Nikon 85/1.8 K, Nikon 85/2 AI-s, Nikon 85/1.4 AI-s, Nikon 85/1.8D, Nikon 85/1.4D and Vivitar 85/1.4. ( enlarge; actual size at 106 DPI).

See Nikon Lens Compatibility for details on your camera. Read down the "AF, AF-D (screw)" column for this lens. S: Subliminally suggests sexual satisfaction. The "S" designation has no other purpose than subliminal seduction; Nikon and electronics and automobile and every kind of marketer have been using letters like "S" and "X" in model numbers since the 1940s for this same reason. Nikon called their first 1946 rangefinder lens mount the "S" mount, then went whole-hog to the "F" SLR mount in 1959, used "S" again when they updated their AI lenses to AI-"S" in 1983, created AF-"S" SWM lenses in 1998 and here it is again. This Nikon 85mm f/1.8 G is the sharpest 85mm lens ever made by Nikon, sharper on the D800 than even the extraordinary 85mm f/1.4 G, and Nikon's been making 85mm lenses since 1949. On the D800 in the laboratory, it's also slightly sharper than the original and still current 85mm f/1.8 AF-D.
