LANTRA conducted its own survey that looked at the 'hidden' workforce ('hidden' being not included in strictly tree- and timber-related businesses, e.g. councils): 'Importantly, inclusion of the hidden workforce improves the gender balance in the industry, increasing the number of women in trees and timber occupations to 19% compared to 7% identified through official statistics' (LANTRA 2011: 2). 2 It has been exactly 80 years ago that the body was found on April 18, 1943 during World War Two. Along with unanswered questions about the murderer, even the woman's identity remains a mystery. Ans: The poet did not mention the departure of the forest from her house because it is a part of human nature to ignore the important matters of their life. We all know that trees are so important for our survival on earth. But still human beings are cutting them for making profits without even thinking of the aftermath. From the Development Woodland Officer Programme to the Forestry Training Fund, the Forestry Commission hosts accessible and valuable resources to help people build and diversify their skills in forestry, offering training in essential skills”. Over the course of a quarter century, he amassed some 140 specimens of the genre, the anthropology of a secret tribe — strange, sweet, subversive photographs of anonymous women engaged in acts of arboreal daring, taken before color film became a commonplace and feminism a conscience.

So, sexism is experienced by female arborists, but it is not exclusive to arboriculture and nor, in my experience, is it widespread or always necessarily coming from other arborists.

Bo: I have always loved climbing. When I was little I used to climb on whatever I could find: doorframes, scaffolding when we were rebuilding the roof, etc. When I found arboriculture it was like a dream come true. I could be outside, climb trees and get paid doing it!! Alternatively, how many female arborists have heard 'Surely you’re not going to be lifting/climbing/cutting that?!' Sometimes harassment and discrimination at work come from clientele and the wider community. Simply by association, it may alter their perceptions. What picture do these words create in your mind: “… sun bury its feet in shadow…”? What could the poet mean by the sun’s ‘feet?’ Idra Novey is an award-winning poet and translator and the author of the novels Ways to Disappear and Those Who Knew , which is forthcoming in November. I think the biggest challenge for me so far was thinking about getting my first job. Being female, I was worried about that employer’s attitudes might be towards me, especially considering this can be a very physically demanding industry. Thankfully, I didn’t come across that and, in fact, being part of a team made up of different people, with different strengths and weaknesses, meant it hasn’t been a problem, we work together to get the job done.

The poem has a symbolic meaning, the trees are an extended metaphor for women. The poet says that the women have rested, healed and recovered and are ready for their primary purpose – to renew the empty forest of mankind. Along the way, I came to cherish trees not only as aerial playgrounds, but as wonders of immense poetic, philosophical, and ecological import. When asked what advice she would give to women entering or trying to progress within our industry, Arboricultural Association Registered Consultant Lesley Adams gave these words of wisdom: Kirsty studied an NVQ Level 3 in Arboriculture and Forestry and now spends the majority of her days climbing or working on the ground as part of a team taking care of trees on behalf of South Tyneside Council. Ans: The house becomes silent as the fragrance of the leaves and lichens which was like a voice urging for a change can no longer be smelt.

Explanation of the Poem: The poet says that the trees are moving out of the confines of the houses, into the open forest. This is unrealistic as trees are immovable and hence, we realize that the poem has a symbolic meaning. We interpret that trees refer to females who have healed themselves and are ready to move out of their homes, into the forests to fulfil their primary purpose of filling the world with mankind. Further she adds that the forest has been empty for the past many days and so, no birds can be seen as they do not have any trees to sit on, on insects can be seen as they do not have any shelter and the Sunlight cannot form any shadows. The forest of humanity has remained empty for many days but will soon be full and bright. Beech. There was a small woodland where I used to walk all the time as a teenager where there were many mature beech on either side of an old green lane and I used to go there to think. I love how their grey limbs appear almost human and the way their sinuous roots cling on to steep banks. When the foliage emerges, the soft fuzz on the leaf margins is so uplifting to see in diffused sunlight. When they germinate, the seed leaves are so fat and round and full of potential and so different from the parent plant that they always surprise me. What advice would you give women entering our industry or trying to progress within it? Other women in the photographs look uneasy about straddling a branch in a hitched-up skirt, annoyed at having to endure the rough bark against their bare legs. In one image, the male photographer is standing close enough for his long shadow to fall eerily over the trunk of the tree, a shadow as large as the woman herself. What’s fascinating about viewing so many amateur images of the same curious phenomenon is the chance to guess from the women’s expressions and gestures what this fleeting moment of mischievousness a few feet off the ground meant to them, if it meant anything at all.
