About this deal

I started this book with trepidation as I thought it was going to another Peter Mayle type book, but I was really surprised how much I liked the author (not nearly as egocentric as Mayle). We spoke good Spanish, though, but with funny accents, and our child, who was obviously fluent in the local dialect, felt humiliated yet more by our differentness. I left with Ds in English, French and Fine Art, on the strength of which I was accepted, unaccountably, by Leeds University to study fine art.

I remember the scent of oranges, and that the ground was carpeted, unaccountably, with spring onions, as if they were grass. Everything that was hard seemed easy - something which moving to a falling down farm in the middle of rural Andalucia should never seem.I stayed in Sevilla for months, until my money ran out and I had to go back to England to replenish my resources. It is forbidden to copy anything for publication elsewhere without written permission from the copyright holder. Wholly enchanted by the rugged terrain of the hillside and the people they meet along the way—among them farmers, including the ever-resourceful Domingo, other expatriates and artists—Chris and Ana Stewart build an enviable life, complete with a child and dogs, in a country far from home. Alvaro and Manuel, La Pepa, added: “We are delighted to be working with this multi-talented team to bring Driving Over Lemons to life, particularly as huge fans of Dan’s writing and work. Richard discovers the author's 1932 non-fiction book Death in the Afternoon, and explores Hemingway’s fascination with bullfighting, which was controversial even at the time he was writing.

However, I am easily manipulated, and over the next three years I got my head down and came up with “Driving Over Lemons”. But it's just not grabbing me, and I guess I just find books about setting up a farm or household fairly dull. It was something about the grace and the beauty of the work… and the sheer physical hardness, the manliness of it, that attracted me.Q: You suddenly became a farmer, and had to take care of pigs and goats, not to mention the various crops (olives, lemons, etc. Although several demos from Stewart's time with Genesis appear on the Genesis Archive 1967-75 box set, he is not credited with playing on any of them. Chris Stewart, skilled sheep-shearer and sometime Genesis drummer, took one look at the Alpujarrás, the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, and decided that's where he wanted to be. If it rains, the water must be contained so it can be used later in the year when drought takes hold. I knew all about this from books and newspapers of course, but I had never walked amongst it nor written a guide to its roads, rivers and railways.
