About this deal

Daniel has over 18 years of experience in construction, home improvement and landscaping and is the lead consultant at DIY Gardening. Coco coir is a by-product of the coconut industry and is made from the husk, which traditionally was discarded as a waste product of little value. To save your back and reduce plastic, you can mix perlite, vermiculite and organic fertiliser to create your own. Now, however, this former waste product is being harvested into a variety of products, ranging from fibers used for rugs and insulation to gardening and composting media.

I’ve seen this myself as when I added water to the dry bricks they expanded to several times their size and weight. Horticultural grit is often found in potting mixes for seeds, seedlings and cuttings as it helps to aerate the mix, making it easier for the young roots grow. Both CANNA and FoxFarmtightly monitor the production of the coconut coir they use in their products, so you can be sure that it’s been properly aged, dried, and flushed of salts.I’ve used coco coir several times in my garden and in pots and it can also be used in hydroponic setups. Because none of these factors are directly in your control, you have to pick suppliers that follow the best practices for coco coir production. Organic food waste, such as coffee grounds, eggshells, vegetables, and fruits can be added and lightly covered with additional coir.

Coco coir pith - or coco peat as it's sometimes misleadingly known - is a fantastic multipurpose growing media made from coconut husks. These bales are then chopped and processed into various formats, from chips, to “croutons” to classic ground coconut coir.

Coconut fibers do break down rather quickly, though, meaning the air pockets they create will also decrease over time.Just dig the waste material into your flower beds at the end of the season, it will help aerate the soil and won’t cause any issues whatsoever. Because coir retains so much water, too much can cause damage to plant roots, essentially drowning them. They have a partnership with aSri Lankan coir producer, meaning they also have full control over the production process. That means the roots of your plants have access to moisture but are unlikely to rot due to overwatering. Almost all of the coconut coir used for hydroponics is brown coir, as it’s processed even more after initial harvesting.

He previously worked as a project manager and has experience in managing teams of tradespeople and landscape gardeners on both small and medium sized projects.

The only difference is instead of watering with only water, you would water your coconut coir garden with nutrient-enriched water.
