About this deal

I think the scanner is very capable on the hardware side, but the Software in my opinion is terrible. There is no way to help the software aligning the single scans. Finally, looking at the stepper motor, the SOL failed once again and produced a model that’s unusable. The are plenty of holes throughout and many of the key surface details are missing. The only saving grace is the writing, which is surprisingly legible. With a resolution of up to 0.1 mm, the scanner can reconstruct high-precision geometric structures and capture fine details of edges, easily handling scanning tasks for objects over 5cm. The iReal 2E is compact and lightweight , with an ergonomic shotgun grip. It measures in at 5.5 in x 3.7 x 10.2 inches and weighs in at just 1.9lbs. This small stature is all the more noteworthy when you factor in its massive scanning field.

However, structured light scanning does have its limitations, particularly in its sensitivity to ambient lighting conditions. Since it relies on projecting and measuring light patterns, external light sources can affect the accuracy of the scan. This makes it less effective in outdoor environments, or other settings where the lighting conditions can vary. For more information on this, we’ve also written a detailed article comparing structured light scanning vs laser triangulation. Laser TriangulationDesign-wise, the MFS1V2 is the perfect portable 3D scanner , folding right up to slot into a bag or store in a drawer. When unfolded it has a simple flatbed and rotating base, so the object can get a full 360-degree scan. The upright portion of the scanner houses the laser and sensors and can move up and down according to the size of your object. Some come completely assembled while others, like 3D printers themselves, you’ll have to put them together by yourself. The benefit for those that are good with that type of thing is it reduces the price and allows for easier upgrades and modifications. Printing Industry thoroughly reviewed our SOL PRO 3D scanner hardware and software and did a series of benchmarking and scanning tests, beginning the review with: Due to its price point and high level of accuracy, the SOL 3D is perfect for a variety of applications. These devices can be used by hobbyists, teachers, and entrepreneurs."

heavy.coms ranks SOL as the 2nd best 3D scanner available in 2022, and explains that the pros are: High accuracy for the price, Easy to maneuver/transport, Software is included.

Reviews 2021

Scan Dimension has been named IDC Innovator for 2020. IDC stands for International Data Corporation – a company that provides global market intelligence for the IT and consumer technology markets. Another slight inconvenience is it needs to remain plugged into the wall and a computer at all times unless you spend extra on a portable battery. Then you can get away with a USB connection to a tablet and can be more mobile.

The Scan Dimension SOL was created to be precise, portable, easy to use, and affordable. It’s geared towards hobbyists, everyday makers, and entrepreneurs,” All3DP writes and continues: According to IDC Scan Dimension and the SOL scanner is believed to be one in four companies to have largest impact on the 3D scanning market in 2020. You will also need to make room for the scanner. Although all the products on our list are small and relatively portable, stationary scanners at least need a table to work from. Likewise, t here will be a minimum and maximum distance the scanner must be in relation to the object being scanned. For a system in this price range, this is a very small average imprecision and a very tight point cloud spread. To put this into context, when using this scanner you can expect 99.6% of your scanned points to be within -0.36 mm and +0.32 mm of their intended dimensions.” What these 3D laser scanners provide is a light source and turntable. The rest of the work is accomplished via a powerful mobile app . It even uses machine learning to keep scan quality high. The EinScan Pro HD is a professional industrial-grade 3D scanner that offers both handheld and static modes to capture high-resolution 3D models of objects of all sizes. To make use of the SOL 3D scanner, you’ll need to get familiar with two different programs: SOL Creator, which is used for scan processing, and SOL Viewer, which is used to view and export scans.

These are specs rarely seen in this price range. It can scan objects as small as 10 x 10 x 10 mm, for example, small rings and gemstones. When I tested the Revopoint POP 2, and the POP 3, neither could scan objects this small with any kind of detail. This makes the MINI all the more impressive. To make things easier you can simultaneously attach the scanner to a tablet for better live viewing while still sending all the data to a main laptop or computer. It’s typically only the more expensive scanners that are good for other applications, like VR, full-body scanning, architecture, and engineering. Handheld vs Stationary
