About this deal

I also don’t have any problems with this book being focused around women because it gives a good reason why without dismissing men or nonbinary people who might also be interested, and it doesn’t make any sexist or TERFy comments. For us lazy witches, or maybe busy witches who don't have time for long, drawn out magic rituals, this does a great job at conveying the message that powerful magic can be short and affordable. For instance, seeing a flower means you'll receive praise but seeing Leonardo's Last Supper means your cup is too big. All the 'spells' that are interspersed in the book are actually just ways of changing the way your brain works and how you think; it is a lot like Mindfulness.

I’m really hating the fact that there are books being written that HAVE TO HAVE FEMINISM WITH WITCHES. If you're going to using the tarot in a spell, *maybe* you should at *least* have a basic understanding of the tarot as a system? That same section also encourages you to “be annoying” about sexual safety to ensure that your partner adheres to it and to stick up for yourself. Before I started this book I was expecting to be thrown into the world of magic and would know how to levitate by the end of the first chapter. It’s exactly like Harry Potter pretending to slip Ron Felix Felicis to ensure that he would do well in the Quidditch match, but he hadn’t actually been given any lucky potion. This chapter begins with the authors saying outright that they are fans of Western medicine, and they encourage you to go to the doctor when you need to.

That is excellent, since a very important part of spellcraft is determining what you actually want, not what you think you want. I haven’t had too many major health scares in my life, but I have loads of chronic problems that are mild enough that they’re (usually) not debilitating, but very annoying and seemingly impossible to get rid of. Though this book is NOT the right choice for witches old and new, it still is very entertaining to read. Oh, also, there's an emphasis on consent, but then follows it up in the next chapter talking about how the author had a sex spell cast on her marriage (so her and her spouse), but didn't inform her husband.

Channel your inner Elle Woods for this week’s episode, because today Rachel and Leah are joined by lawyer AND witch, Melinda Lim! It’s the same deal, associating scents with emotional states, but smells are already so emotionally charged and naturally linked to our memory. In addition, I found the book to be so shallow, vague, and random, that I can’t imagine who will get anything out of it. They swap stories from their favorite episodes, reminisce on how much they’ve changed as human beings, and share a little sneak peek of what the next iteration of Basic Witches will look like. When using tarot cards you really need to know what the meaning of the card is, you don't just pick the pretty one.
