About this deal

Ari is struggling to figure out what he wants in life and what dream he truly wants to pursue now that high school is over. On a more individual level, there is an exploration of friendship, and its importance, and how it has to be nurtured to survive.

I think she is a brilliant artist and I feel that with her illustrations, even without talking directly to each other, we have made a beautiful book together! Niks zo leuk als de lokale boekwinkel, Roojboek in Venray, binnenspringen om een nieuw recensieboek op te mogen halen. And everyone seems to be allergic to it — except Anaya, Petra and Seth, who haven’t felt this lively in ages. A whole term’s English planning linked to the book ‘Bloom: The Surprising Seeds of Sorrel Fallowfield’ by Katherine Rundell. As an avid baker himself,Hector is filling up his time in East Beach by working at Ari’s family bakery.

we get a wonderfully inspiring book of one family struggle and ability to rebuild what they feared lost. It's interesting, short, has lots of pictures, and tells a touching story which is not sugar-coated, nor defeatist. This is definitely a more character- than plot-driven story, so if you're like me and you prefer character-driven reads, this one will be right up your alley; not a ton of drama or conflict goes on, but it's more focused on Ari coming to terms with what makes him happy and who he wants to be, and his slow-budding relationship with Hector. Even as you list the supposed forms of the ‘avant-garde’, the excitement drains out of me and I’m left only with ‘genres’, fixed modes etc.

Main characters are assumed White; same-sex marriages and gender equality at the warfront appear to be the norm in this world. As Hector breathes new life into the bakery, he and Ari begin to develop a friendship, the intensity of which surprises both of them. Who would have thought that sitting in a rose garden and listening to the birds, as Odell talks about doing, could become such a political act?Anaya, Seth, and Petra have always felt different from their peers on their British Columbia island. Of course there is also much to be said for permitting your mind to surf on a book, as there is for letting your mind move over any art form and pick up sparks from it. My favourite section of the book is part two, “The Treasury of Plants”, in which Adrian’s brilliant photography and his eye for composition shines through. However, churches may not find this book as helpful within their curriculum as it is a fiction novel and does not have theological themes, butitmay be a good book to keep inmindas arecommendationto younger readers.

Kenneth Oppelhas written a thriller so exciting that the pages might well have been printed with adrenaline. A "big event" happens at one point in the book that felt unnecessarily dramatic, I wasn't a fan, but I like the sweet conclusion that doesn't make too much of it all, just enough. At one point one of the characters is being a dick and the other character is like “Hakuna your Tatas sister and don’t blame me for this”, well he did not exactly say that but the idea is that this is one of the first times I see this in a novel and I think it should be a more prevalent occurrence!Superb storytelling, great characters and an environmental crisis — readers will hardly be able to wait for the second book in the trilogy. It felt pretty formulaic and stereotypical, so I was never really shocked or emotional at anything that happened. In a now-famous essay, the high-profile critic James Wood sets out to damn the likes of Pynchon, DeLillo, DFW, and Salman Rushdie.
