Sony has VPG400 certification for its CFexpress Type A cards, and the first company to obtain VPG 400 certification for a Type B card was Exascend earlier this year. Lexar’s upcoming CFexpress cards will also carry the certification. What Memory Card Brands Should You Buy? To this day, SD cards remain the most used form of storage for digital cameras. They’re cheap, small, and can be quite fast. The diminutive size also allows manufacturers to implement dual card slots in even very compact bodies. Similarly, it’s very common for a camera to feature an SD slot alongside another card type, like CompactFlash or CFexpress. The successor to CompactFlash, now based on the Serial ATA (SATA) interface, first hit the market in 2009, though it would take several years for the imaging industry to fully adopt the format.

CFexpress is the latest standard from the CompactFlash Association. Originally launched in 2017 and using the XQD form-factor, the cards utilized two PCIe 3.0 lanes along with NVMe 1.2 for low latency and overhead. In 2019, the CFexpress 2.0 standard was announced, with an upgraded NVMe 1.3 protocol; two new form factors, “Type A” and “Type C” were announced, with the existing XQD form factor becoming “Type B.” Image via Explora USB 3.0 and USB-C CFast Reader: The combination of USB-A and USB-C is designed to allow one device to compatible with variety macbook pro, mac air, computer, laptop and other type-c devices simultaneously . Save photographers and videographers time and equipment costs. The NAFTA/USMCA applies to goods made in Canada, Mexico and the U.S., none of which make CFast cards. Despite this innovation in CFast technology, and the support Lexar hadgained from the likes of ARRI, on June 26ᵗʰof 2017 Micron announced that it would be discontinuing its Lexarremovable storage business ¹¹. The CFast cards can perform data transfers at a speed of about 600 MB/s, the same as a high-end SSD. This makes them ideal for 4K video and other bandwidth heavy applications. Especially when compared to SD cards, which max out at less than half of that speed.

The advantage of CFast over other memory storage solutions is that it uses the same Serial ATA (or SATA) bus that your PC uses. The original Compact Flash used a Parallel ATA (or PATA) connection, like the one you’d find on computers from the ’90s. Performance Almost any SD card on the market will be labeled Class 10 — there are a few lingering Class 4 cards you can find brand new, but for the most part, they’re all Class 10. Just look for a small “10” inside of a “C” on the front. This number was used to communicate that the card was capable of at least 10 MB/s read and write speeds, and lower classes denoted lower MB/s speeds. Branching outside of these suggestions is taking the risk that quality control isn’t quite there yet and while you’ll certainly find lower prices, you’ll also find lower reliability. We don’t recommend risking it: you don’t want to find a corrupted memory card that has made accessing valuable photos or videos impossible. Exceptional production quality demands peak performance recording. Our CFast 2.0 cards are the choice of camera manufactures because they lead the industry for highest sustained speed performance throughout the capacity of the card. With a sustained write speed of 480 MB/s, confidently explore uninterrupted shooting in all cinematic modes, including 4K DCI RAW, Ultra HD, and Full HD video, as well rapid burst photography.

Avoid these at all costs. No cameras support the format and mutliple experts that have spoken to PetaPixel don’t believe any ever will. Repeat: no camera on the market in any category supports the SD Express format. Without such support, you get worse performance while paying significantly more than SD UHS-II cards. SD Express looks identical to SD cards, but don’t perform the same. Avoid them. | Photo by Jaron Schneider for PetaPixel With any of these things, my memory of the details discussed last year could be at fault here of course!. Other than read and write speeds, CFexpress also has one certification worth noting right now: VPG. VPG stands for Video Performance Guarantee and was first created in 2011 by the Compact Flash Association (CFA) with Profile 1. Profile 1 guaranteed sustained write performance of up to 20 MB/s but as video quality has increased, demands have grown. As a result, the CFA has published additional profiles for VPG, the most recent being VPG 400.
