This can be read as a stand-alone but the characters will gain a greater richness if the books are read in sequence. And things happen that baffle even Ryan's logic, even of he can feel that little itch under his skins that tells him that nothing as straightforward as it appears. The Bookseller magazine has reported on Louise having topped the ‘Most Read’ and ‘Most Sold’ fiction charts, and she has garnered an army of loyal fans who love her atmospheric and addictive storytelling. This one had a very different feel to it and didn’t have quite as much suspense and drama but I didn’t mind that and still found myself hooked. Emotional at times, brimming with brilliant characters, richly drawn landscapes and more that its fair share of mystery and suspense, I loved it.

Will these 2 ever get their act together and admit they like each other in more than a professional way? However, his attempts at finding peace are complicated when the remains of a young woman are found at a historical sight. Anyone that has read crime fiction will recognize the style and themes present in the DCI Ryan books. When a ten-year-old girl turns up on DCI Ryan’s doorstep to tell him she’s witnessed a murder, he has no idea he’s about to step into his most spellbinding case yet.

Not quite a cliffhanger ending, but only because the real da-da-daaaa moment actually comes a couple of chapters earlier, with Ryan's very final comments leaving you with a very ominous feeling about what comes next. The trouble is the murder happened eight years ago, when the girl was a toddler, and the victim was a member of a travelling circus.
