About this deal

There are only a couple of tales that do this, so for the casual reader or those entirely new to folk horror: do not be put off.

Damnable Tales: A Folk Horror Anthology a book by Richard Wells.

The Withered Arm was also a very interesting story, with almost a time travel/sensing the future paradox of the two main characters harming each other unintentionally, in ways that depend on the actions of the other. As these stories occur early in the book, it would be advised perhaps not to read cover to cover but to dip in and out randomly, or even start at the last story and work widdershins back to the beginning. Throughout, the general themes are of ‘modern/town/Christian’ folk deposited in a rural setting, stumbling out of the comfortable, predictable, but perhaps somewhat unexciting worlds of the familiar into other, older, weirder goings-on that alternately attract, bamboozle, or terrify them. The subtle touch of adding an earthy red to some of the chapter openings is just a little thing, but I found it nice attention to detail. Tales Accursed is the second collection of classic supernatural stories selected by the artist Richard Wells.Last weekend, I gathered together all 23 of my completed lino blocks, and printed a fresh set onto plain white paper (all of my prints til now have been on the lovely textured handmade 'lokta' paper, this isthe paper that all of the pledge reward lino prints will be printed onto). These are the settings of our ancestors, and therefore are still carried somewhere deep within us now: remote villages and darkened lanes, lonely woodlands, obscure country houses and crumbling cemeteries. Historias que nos recuerdan al hombre de mimbre y es que aquí se hayan probablemente todos los cuentos que dieron lugar al subgénero del folk horror. This is a great story, and one of the oldest in the collection- Nesbit was writing at the same time as Arthur Conan Doyle! Should his name have somehow escaped attention, then his work (film posters for The Wicker Man and A Field in England, his lino-cut prints of folkloric entities, his cover for Edward Parnell’s atmospheric and resonant book Ghostland, and pieces featuring film and TV (most notably Ben Wheatley’s film In The Earth)) will very likely not have passed unnoticed.

The 30th of April of course was Walpurgis Night, traditionally when fires are lit to ward off evil spirits, and the Devil himself creeps abroad. Primarily working in the television industry, he has provided graphic props for the likes of Poldark, Sherlock, Doctor Who, and the recent BBC adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The reason is that when we started Unbound( back in 2011) UK banks didn't have allow us to hold a user's card details for more than 30 days - which made crowdfunding pretty much impossible. For example the idea that someone who is unbaptised is in danger from supernatural forces, the fear of the ancient inhabitants of Britain. They stalk the moors at night, the deep forests, cornered fields and dusky churchyards, the narrow lanes and old ways of these ancient places, drawing upon the haunted landscapes of folk-horror – a now widely used term first applied to a series of British films from the late 1960s and 1970s: Witchfinder General (1968), Blood on Satan’s Claw (1971), and The Wicker Man (1973). I’ve not had a copy and worried it’s gone to my old address, I did try to update it when I moved house but don’t know if there’s a way to check where it’s been sent?
