About this deal

A magnificent monument to him stood there until it was destroyed by the Great Fire of London in 1666. The National Trust carries out vital conservation work in and around Corfe Castle, helping to protect this historic site for the enjoyment of visitors both now and in the future. As this is the beginning of the series, I am looking forward to seeing how the dynamics between the characters change as the stories evolve. I was drawn to it because I recently spent a couple of days at Corfe Castle and I found it hard to imagine anyone getting murdered there.

She has been sent down from the Birmingham force for 6 months so she can have a quieter life getting over a traumatic event. The main character was absolutely horrible, a foul mouthed manhating, bickering bully, all she seemed to do was argue with and belittle her staff. I thought I should try a series featuring female CI dealing with new assignment as well as changes in her personal life that were also challenging. When the mother of two kidnapped children is told to choose which one she can have back, Zoe must track down the kidnapper before it’s too late. Lesley defies the conventions especially in her encouragement of a young female uniformed officer, oh and the odd swear word! The Corfe Castle Murders’ is the first book in the new Dorset Crime series featuring Detective Chief Inspector Lesley Clarke.

Just what was he doing on site and why was a member of the crew named Patrick going through his things earlier. The time of King John’s reign was a troubled one, and Corfe Castle became a refuge for an insecure monarch, as well as a convenient place to lock up political prisoners. Also, I like characters, including the DCI where there is one, to have personal lives, but not to the extent that I felt I'd started the series with book two. Clarke doesn’t suffer fools gladly and if somebody upsets her then she won’t hesitate to make her feelings known.

I believe there is a good book to listen to but I can't concentrate because of the whiny, grating poor accents. The idea of a city hardened detective relocating to a backwater has been dealt with better elsewhere without resorting to the blatant stereotypes of rural police in evidence here. McLean’s debut novel was “Thicker Than Water,” which she published in 2018 to much critical acclaim. What is surprising for Lesley the detective crime inspector is that her law firm is not cooperating as well as she would have expected. But when she hears the anguished screams by Laila she dashes to the scene and begins a murder investigation.

Review: The Corfe Castle Murders by Rachel McLean Book Review: The Corfe Castle Murders by Rachel McLean

I'm the first to admit that some people's attitudes here can be quite insular but although the pace of life might be a little slower in some instances, I found the constant suggestion that, aside from a couple of exceptions, her new colleagues were slow-witted and judgemental to be really quite annoying. In March 978, the teenage King Edward visited his half-brother Ethelred at the Saxon stronghold that predated the Norman castle we see at Corfe today. Carl has moved with her (and Yoda the cat) – will Zoe find herself getting embroiled in a Professional Standards case? Lesley's preconceptions meant I rolled my eyes at a scene where she is looking a mess and is concerned that she is 'already turning into a country bumpkin' having earlier thought to herself that 'At last, one of these bumpkins spoke her language'. At the start of the series, she is introduced as having been injured in a bombing incident in Birmingham and now rumors abound that she is afflicted with PTSD, among other mental issues.

After a brief period of confiscation, the castle was handed back to the Bankes family, and it remained in their ownership for three and a half centuries.
