Convinced by the potential future success of Ketel One vodka, Carl Jr, the oldest son moved to America to personally handle its sales and marketing. The family took the decision to launch Ketel One without any advertising, just word of mouth. Carl Jr. and his brother Bob literally went from bar to bar with a bottle of Ketel One and a videotape explaining how their vodka was made and generally educating bar owners and managers about their vodka and vodka production. New Western Gin: This is really a catch-all term for newer gins that don’t fit into the previous categories. But the through line is that these gins, while still using juniper as a key ingredient, are flavored with a wide range of botanicals, and often use ones that are grown locally to showcase the flavors of where they are made. Its focus is on using local botanicals to create a smooth, enjoyable drink in the form of its Ki No Bi Kyoto Dry Japanese Gin. This gin wasn’t available internationally until 2017, but its release was well worth the wait. It uses a spirit base distilled from rice combined with juniper, yellow yuzu, hinoki (cypress) wood chips, bamboo, gyokuro tea, and green sanshō (Japanese peppercorn). The Nolet family have been distillers in Schiedam, Netherlands since 1691 and with over 320 years of genever distilling experience they are well qualified to make a gin. Since assuming the role of chairman in 1979, Carolus Nolet'sr. has also proved his family's mastery of marketing with the astounding success of its Ketel One Vodka brand which he introduced in 1983. Like many other brands, Bols has expanded their genever selection. Beyond the original, you can find barrel-aged bottles, which are rested in French Limousin oak casks for 18 months.

But if you’re looking for something with a wider array of botanicals, distilleries around the country, as well as some abroad, make their own new school gins. These all include juniper as a base flavor, of course, but often use spices and fruit that define the region in which they are produced. And consider price as well when deciding on a gin, because some of the best are the least expensive. You cannot miss Bombay Sapphire on the liquor shelf. Its blue bottle has an allure that will catch your eye, though the gin itself is not blue—look to Magellan Gin for that. You will find the gin to be very aromatic and filled with rich flavors, making it a true delight for any gin lover. Over the generations, the Nolet Distillery grew, surviving challenges such as the French Revolution and the ensuing political instability. Generation after generation of Nolets have built upon what has been established by their forefathers. The Eleven Generations of the Nolet distilling dynasty Popular flavours include orange, lemon, cinnamon, nutmeg, coriander and angelica root. Distilled in Cheshire, England, Bombay Sapphire's full list of vapor-infused botanicals include juniper, almond, grains of paradise, lemon peel, licorice, orris root, angelica, coriander, cassia bark, and cubeb berries. It's old meets new with this gin. While the brand is relatively young, having launched in 1987, the beautiful array is based on a recipe from 1761. I've been privileged to sample both spirits next to one another prior to blending and, while both would make a fabulous vodka in their own right, such a tasting reveals that the sum is greater than the parts. Apparently, I'm the only "outsider" to have experienced this comparative tasting. Carolus used the antique coal-fired alembic copper pot still, 'Distilleerketel #1' which had also been the inspiration for his premium genever, to make a pot still vodka. However, pot stills produce very heavy-tasting vodkas which was not the character he was searching for, so he blended this with column still vodka. After much experimentation, Carolus perfected the methods and the blend used to make Ketel One Vodka. A vodka with a crispness from the column still and the rounded sophistication from the pot still. From its rich heritage to its unique use of fresh botanicals, it’s time to get to know all about NOLET’S Finest Gins. The Heritage of NOLET’S Gin This gin is distilled in a copper pot still named "Marjorie." The botanical list includes juniper, angelica root, cassia bark, cinnamon, coriander seed, lemon peel, licorice, nutmeg, orange peel, and orris root. The best gin brands Rank Aside from that, there really are no limits, and today's gins feature a wide range of herbs, spices, flowers and fresh fruit to create the complex, sultry spirits we know today. Today, drinkers can enjoy the diversity of gin.Unlike vodka, each bottle of gin is truly unique. The majority feature some degree of the pine flavor that comes from juniper, which is gin's signature ingredient, yet no two bottles have the same combination of botanicals.Gin isn't just from England and the U.S. Distilleries all over the world produce versions that try to capture the character of where they're made. There are three main categories. Distilled gin is produced from a mash of grains in the same way that whiskey might be. Redistilled gin is a neutral grain spirit that has been distilled a second time. And compound gin is a neutral grain spirit that’s been infused with flavors (this is the least common style). While you can use nearly any botanical you can think of to flavor gin, juniper is the key ingredient. There are two ways to infuse the botanical flavors into gin—either by macerating them in the spirit, or suspending them in what is essentially a large tea bag above the spirit and infusing the gin with vapors. Then there are a few different styles of gin to consider. It might actually work to its advantage. Because while the brand is known for producing good quality vodka and gin, it’s Spirit Works’ sloe gin that really shines through. Malfy offers a variety of flavors, but the clear favorite is the Gin Con Limone. You can also explore the effects of aging on gin—something most gin is not subjected to—with Martin Miller's 9 Moons. This bottling rests the gin in previously used bourbon barrels for nine months to give it a fascinating sweetness of vanilla and oak. The early 1980s saw the launch of Absolut which, thanks to its iconic advertising, transformed the vodka market. As a distiller, Carolus couldn't help noticing the impact vodkas such as Absolut and Stolichnaya were having in America and the number of people who were enjoying them in Martinis. When he tried these vodkas he was convinced that he could make something better – a "softer, silky smooth vodka" without harsh peppery notes. So he set out to make a vodka particularly suited to being drunk neat in a Martini.
