Doyle doubts his influence has been so profound. “There was the thing that there was going to be this whole raft of Roddy Doyle writers because of the success of the first three, four books. There are plenty of people who write about life in working-class Ireland but I don’t see them as overly inspired by me.” Maslin, Janet (14 August 1991). "Review/Film; How American Soul Music Conquered Dublin". The New York Times . Retrieved 4 July 2016. Lots of Irish slang and written to capture some of the accent. This trilogy centers around the Rabbitte family. Each book has a different tone, which was interesting to me since the bulk of the story is conveyed in oddly formatted dialogue. Why is that interesting at all? I struggle to write beyond mere summarizations so I get overexcited when I think I recognize the craft in writing. The only reason I don't give it the full five stars is this: My only small cavil is that when Sharon has the baby she names her daughter, Georgina, after the Rapist, George. I don't buy that and it upset me the first time I read it and upset me again this time. I once asked Roddy Doyle at a reading why he did that and he said that she was doing it to annoy her father. It is something I didn't think plausible. Sharon was raped by an older man when she was drunk in the parking lot of a disco. Her father supports her decision to have the child - and she calls it after the rapist?

Hewis, Ben (21 May 2015). "The Commitments to close in November". WhatsOnStage.com . Retrieved 4 July 2016. Despite dealing with quite a dense subject matter, the tone of this book managed to remain light-hearted. As before, there was a hilarious use of dialogue that made this both a fast-paced and entertaining read. This was used to ease the darker subject matter in to the narrative, and the reader remains unaware in the shift of tone until it has actually occurred. When Jimmy Senior's friend Brendan, known to all as Bimbo, is made redundant Jimmy's mood is lifted as he gets to have some company to fill the long and lonely days. When Bimbo's redundancy cheque arrives Bimbo has an idea and the two friends embarked on an unlikely business venture.

I’m one of the few people on the planet who’s never seen the Alan Parker movie, and when I was in London last fall, I noticed there was even a long-running stage version of it. But I guess through cultural osmosis I knew what the book was about: the making (and abrupt unmaking) of a north Dublin soul band. The book covers all of Sharon's pregnancy and the scandal it causes, which is pretty hilarious. Also Jimmy Sr reads the "What to Expect when Expecting" and questions Sharon at inopportune times "if her her hormones are causing her troubles? Do you have problems on the toilet? How ya sleeping?" Sharon finds these questions off-putting as well as surprising as her father has 6 children and never seemed to notice any of these pregnancies or was present for any of the births. But that's Jimmy ya never know what he is going to do. Pecchia, David (26 August 1990). "Films going into production". Los Angeles Times . Retrieved 4 July 2016. An absurd comedy of the commonplace…a charming, truthful and immensely funny story which leaves you gasping for more’ The Biography Channel The Corrs biography". The Biography Channel. And it’s not all salty dialogue. Here’s a little bit of exposition during the band’s first performance: Harris, Will (4 November 2011). "Colm Meaney · Random Roles". The A.V. Club . With Jimmy as manager, the newly fangled Commitments start recruiting and practicing in earnest, first in the garage of the only elderly band member ("Joey The Lips was a baldy little bollix nearly fifty."), later in improvised venues in front of a raucous audience. In between rehearsals Jimmy and Joey the Lips educate their fellow band members on the meaning of Soul:

It was okay. A relaxing read for a lazy Sunday afternoon with some time to spare and a way to not think about anything serious. That's what I thought. While these two are on the forefront of Doyle's attention, we do get some time with Sharon's siblings (even Jimmy, Jr. -- a little bit -- still trying to make it in the music business) and long-suffering mother. We watch the family stumble along through financial woes, various school clubs, a bicycle club or two, and being the subject of neighborhood gossip. These all might not be as well rounded and Sharon and her father are, but they're close enough that you think you know them. The story is about two close mates in Ireland, both unemployed, called Jimmy Snr and Bimbo. They decide to start a business running a chip van, called Bimbo's Burgers. Both of them are pretty useless, likely lads, and somehow they seem to fashion a living out of the thing. Being Catholic, they seem to be surrounded by large numbers of kids, and both are married - so there's lots and lots of Irish banter. Guld- och Platinacertifikat − År 1987−1998" (PDF) (in Swedish). IFPI Sweden. Archived from the original (PDF) on 17 May 2011 . Retrieved 28 January 2023. the story itself doesn't really go anywhere, which is partly why i expected it to be bad, but i could almost say that the progression of the narrative is focused so much (and so well) on the friendship between jimmy sr and bimbo that the plot is not as relevant. some may find it boring in that sense, but for me it was still engaging. Even when he was standing still he was moving”: that’s fine writing. Other gems are sprinkled throughout, showing you that Doyle is a novelist, not just a playwright or screenwriter. And he's an artist.
