About this deal

Comment: There is a good balance between savoury and sweet, the coastal character of the whisky is clear, it reminds me of bonfires on the beach. Its time in sherry casks has also left its mark, mingling with the peatiness without being overpowered. This year’s shortlist included a mix of whiskies from across Scotland, with some unexpected bold flavours. Palate: Floral notes combine with sea salt and almond meal, lemon tart and tropical fruits of melon and mango.

Rich, bold and smoky, peat works its way into every nook and cranny it can find, making it hard to produce both peated and unpeated spirit at the distillery. Still, for six months each year Tobermory produces heavily-peated single malt, and they call it Ledaig. What does it taste like? Both these whiskies scored a 7 in my eyes, but I’ve a stronger preference for the 18 due to the dark and richer character. The 18 had a quieter smoke/peat presence with a hint of coast when compared to the 10 which is vibrant, loud and full of flavour. I think on this occasion I was in the mood for subtle smoke and a fruity element. Any other day the 10 would be an absolutely delicious pour for any mood. Vanilla custard. Parma violet sweets. Floral taste on initial sip. A much dryer peat smoke coats the tongue nicely. There’s some charred oak here. The finish and flavour last so much longer on this dram and comparing it to the 10yo. Velvety dark chocolate and a hint of cherry. Some delicious stroopwafel. Smoked ham and fried Brussels sprouts with hazelnuts. A wee hit of redcurrant bitterness develops after a while. Glencairn The Glencairn Whisky Glass is a revolutionary whisky glass that really lets you savor the taste and complexity of fine whisky. The glass is great to use for any of your ‘wee nippy sweeties’ whether it be Single Malt Whiskies, Irish Whiskies, or even single barrel bourbons. With the tapered mouth, you are able to really smell all of the nuances the whisky has to offer. Any malt advocate will love this glass! Champagne, Brandy, Wine… each has its own glass. Yet whisky, the worlds most complex spirit can be found served in anything from hiball tumblers to Paris goblets. It’s a bit like pouring your vintage champagne into a pint tumbler or your XO brandy into a shot glass! Whisky is a drink to be savoured. Time spent enjoying the flavours on the nose are equally important as those on the palate. Raymond Davidson decided it was about time someone designed a proper whisky glass… The perfect glass for whisky was created and left to mature for some twenty years at the bottom of a filing cabinet. After adequate maturation, his sons Paul and Scott decided to take his design to the people who know best…… Picture yourself on a Caledonian ferry sailing through the islands on the West Coast of Scotland sipping on a well produced single malt whisky. This reminds us of Ledaig. A splendid peaty whisky from the Tobermory Distillery on the Isle of Mull in Scotland’s west coast. Sherry matured and bottled at 46.3% ABV. Okayama Japanese Whisky Distillery We have a selection of Japanese Single Malt Whisky from the Okayama Distillery which is available in Australia for home delivery. The next day nosing of the 18 brought a cold fish platter on a plank of charred wood. It was slightly ashy and reminiscent of pine surface cleaner. An enjoyable sniff.

Giving her thoughts on this year’s winner, our buying director Dawn Davies MW says ‘It is great to see the distilleries that are less well-known winning tastings like this. I think this Ledaig offers fantastic value for money for an 18-year-old, and always offers consistency across the range.’ Togouchi Japanese Whisky Buy Togouchi Whisky Online We have a selection of Japanese Whisky produced at the Chugoku Jozo Distillery under the brand name Togouchi. Ledaig 18: The Whisky Exchange Whisky of the Year

Brendan McCarron, master distiller at Ledaig, said: "Ledaig 18 Year Old is truly a deliciously peated single malt Scotch that has rich and smoky sherry notes that are balanced with seaweed and light creosote in the mouth, before a long smoky finish with liquorice and sea spray notes. Palate: Sweet and spicy, the palate initially brings notes of chilli flakes, ginger and honey, before chocolate-covered coffee beans join the fray. Soft tendrils of peat smoke appear, flanked by orange peel, walnuts and leafy, green herbs. The Whisky Exchange has also recognised other exceptional bottles, a rum and a gin, nominated by industry experts and staff.

Blended Scotch Whisky A blended whisky is the production of whisky using one or more whiskies from a different distillery. So if we have Glenlivet single malt and we mix it with another Glenlivet single malt it is still as single malt. However if we mixed that single malt with a Glenfiddich it is now blended whisky, simples. This allows whiskies of lesser age and personality to be used to blend flavours together and make a cheap alternative to single malt. There’s always talk of blended whisky not being nearly as good as its closest competitor the single mal, but we beg to differ here at The Whisky Company. When the weather warms and your looking for something a little more thirst quenching and cooler you should turn to some excellent blended whiskies. Some examples of blended whisky are Johnnie Walker, Chivas Regal, Bells, Jameson Irish Whisky, Canadian Club, Seagram’s Seven American Whiskey and let’s not forget some of those extra special Japanese brands including Hibiki. Some new blended whisky in the market now is the Pure Scot blend from Bladnoch Distillery and Hibiki Harmony from Suntory. These whiskies can be taken straight, on ice or mixed to make a refreshing contemporary drink… Ledaig, produced at Tobermory distillery on the picturesque Isle of Mull, claimed the top spot in the 9th annual Whisky of the Year blind tasting hosted by The Whisky Exchange. Nose: seaweed notes and eucalyptus, followed by mineral smoke and oyster shells. Hints of brass polish. While there is a hint of berries and tobacco, the sherry is not very prominent. Then a firm sooty note comes forward, as well as a light farmy note. The name Ledaig (pronounced Led-chig) comes from the original name for the area in which Mull’s only whisky distillery is located and derives from the Gaelic term meaning 'safe haven'. Winner of 2 spirit awards

We are truly honoured to have impressed the blind taste panel, and titles don't get much bigger than whisky of the year.” Nose: Earthy peat smoke balances with fresh warm honey, some umami, sea salt and melted dark chocolate. Fresh fruity aromas start to appear through the smoke. Ledaig has a lot in common with Islay, namely the use of peated malt, but it cuts a much different figure than your typical Islay peat bombs. Primarily that is because this 18 year old malt is finished with sherry casks, a practice that is not unknown in Islay but which isn’t all that common.
