The Castle of Tangled Magic - A Cascade of Books Book Review- The Castle of Tangled Magic - A Cascade of Books

APA style: The Castle of Tangled Magic.. (n.d.) >The Free Library. (2014). The family are descended from royalty and their home is the huge Castle Mila. The castle is 500 years old and with its 33 turrets and domes is full of secrets. Olia loves to explore it, searching for hidden doorways into the domes which are full of magic. When a magical storm threatens to destroy Castle Mila and Olia's family, she is called upon to save it. To do so, she sets off on a thrilling adventure to the Land of Forbidden Magic, which is full of spirits who were banished there by Olia's ancestor, Ludmila. The magical world is so well described and explored, and the magical creatures are so diverse and beautifully crafted. They are all unique characters with personalities and roles to further the plot. My personal favourites would be Deg a type of tree creature, and Feliks who is a fox spirit who protects the castle, and is a very important ally to Olia throughout the novel.Author Guy Bass introduces SCRAP, about one robot who tried to protect the humans on his planet against an army of robots. Now the humans need his...

Korytarze w zamku skrywają wiele tajemnic i magii… Magi, którą żeby dostrzec trzeba najpierw w nią uwierzyć. Olia lives in Castle Mila with her parents, baby sister and Babusya. Her Babusya has warned her that a huge storm is approaching the Castle, which may well destroy it. Battling through her fears, Olia finds herself travelling through one of the Castle’s Domes into a world of tangled magic, a world beyond the Castle where she must venture to save her family and her home from a magical storm. The Castle of Tangled Magic' by Sophie Anderson is a true triumph of middle grade magic and imagination. I loved the story of Olia’s heritage and how the world beyond the Castle came into existence. The references to Slavic folklore permeate and enrich the story, and I especially loved Koshka (having read James Mayhew’s wonderful Koshka’s Tales, recommended by the author). I also loved the part that the nature-spirits played in the story and, of course, the wonderful domovoi, Feliks who offers Olia encouragement, friendship and hope.Unlike Sophie's first two novels, this one is a "portal" story, where Olia, who already lives in a wondrous and probably magical castle, travels through a portal with a household spirit into a land of pure magic. A land where everything is starting to fall apart, where she needs to find allies and find her way and find a solution before everything unravels completely. There's such an overwhelming sense of peril, that kept me absolutely gripped. The fairy tale creatures she meets are fascinating too, drawn from a Russian folklore that I'm really not familiar with, to give the whole thing a sense of being different and intriguing. And as with all the best fairy tales, things are never quite what they first seem. Soon Olia learns that she is destined to save this land, but with time running out and her new friends and family in danger, she must search for the magic within herself - to save everything and everyone she loves. My thanks to Usborne Publishing and NetGalley for the digital copy of The Castle of Tangled Magic by Sophie Anderson in return for an honest review.

Sophie Anderson Press Reviews

Throughout her adventure, Olia encounters a diverse array of magical beings drawn from Slavic folklore. In this enchanted realm, she learns that appearances can be deceiving, and that mysteries abound at every turn. This was really sweet! The love Olia had for her family (+ for her baby sister in particular) was really lovely to read, and I'd be happy to give this to any of the children in my life. Great messages about family, friendship, courage, the importance of people over material items, etc. Family and love are at the heart of the story- it's not the place that is the home, but the people in it. Taking responsibility for the past - the actions of our ancestors - and not forgetting but seeking to face up to it and making amends is a poignant thread to the tale. Olia has to come to terms with the shameful and thoughtless actions of her predecessors and proves that she is different. People have the power to change things if they believe in themselves.

The Castle of Tangled Magic by Sophie Anderson Review - The Castle of Tangled Magic by Sophie Anderson

Welcome to The Castle of Tangled Magic read-along! There are 6 sections to this read-along, that correlate with the action of the book. For each section you’ll find: an extract prompt, a video message from the author, a discussion point, and a fun activity for the whole class. And the illustrations by Saara Soderlund? STUNNING! My word, they really add to the beauty of the prose and embodies the world so well. There's a fairytale quality to them which is perfect for the Russian folktale inspired settings of Anderson's novel. This is truly a case of a book having it all. Twelve-year-old Olia knows a thing or two about secrets. Her parents are the caretakers of Castle Mila, a soaring palace with golden domes, lush gardens, and countless room. Literally countless rooms. There are rooms that appear and disappear, and rooms that have been hiding themselves for centuries. The only person who can access them is Olia. She has a special bond with the castle, and it seems to trust her with its secrets.

Age range(s)

Three accidental heroes encounter one legendary villain in an epic dragon-filled adventure just right for young fans of Terry Pratchett, J.R.R. Tolkien, and How to Train Your Dragon! When thirteen-year-old Olia, steps through a magical doorway, she discovers another land. A land tangled by magic, where hope is lost, and a scheming wizard holds all the power. An exhilarating, awe-inspiring debut from a master storyteller writing for children for the first time, perfect for fans of Philip Pullman, Katherine Rundell and Eva Ibbotson. I thought this book was magical and enthralling. I couldn't stop reading this book. My favourite character was Olia as she cared abiut everyone and she was willing to make sacrifices to help the spirits.
