About this deal

Above: At 1135g, the Sigma on the left is 260g lighter than the Sony on the right and you can feel a small difference in your hands, but remember the Sony has a maximum aperture that’s one third of a stop brighter throughout the range. Both lenses are described as splash and dust resistant, and both have rubber rings on their lens mounts. As a "DG" lens, it is compatible with all Sony E-mount mirrorless ("DN") cameras, including both full-frame ("DG") and APS-C sensor format models, Leica L-mount, and Fujifilm X mount. While you'll love those focal length ranges, the teleconverters have a negative impact on image quality — especially the 2x model. These are some of the most obscure aspects of image quality, and they are either easily corrected by a lens profile, (in the case of chromatic aberration) …or impossible, in the case of coma & astigmatism. Compared to the Nikon 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G AF-S VR Lens, the Tamron manages to perform at a similar level in many facets, including image quality in the center of the frame. Both lenses offer weather sealing and a similar feature set. When taking the price point of both lenses into consideration, the Nikon certainly seems overpriced, and it’s hard to recommend the Nikon over the Tamron. NIKON D780 + VR 100-400mm f/4.5-6.3E @ 145mm, ISO 100, 1/250, f/5.0

I use all of the focal lengths in this lens for landscape photography and usually carry a lens covering the 100-400mm range for such use. While selecting a telephoto lens is a good choice from a safety concern perspective (safety both from and for the subject), it also is a good choice because there is typically a physical or designated barrier, such as a fence or the perimeter lines on a sports field, preventing a closer shooting location. As discussed throughout this review, the Sigma 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM C Lens is very similar to the DN version lens. Sometimes, laziness (or perhaps, "relaxation" sounds better) is a good reason to use the 100-400mm focal length range.

Having said that, I should mention that if you’re considering the slightly more affordable Sigma 100-400mm DG HSM, a DSLR lens, here’s some bad news- that lens doesn’t have the option for a tripod collar at all, despite being just as front-heavy as this new DN version. Thus, long story short, if you don’t already own one of these lenses, and you currently shoot Sony mirrorless or Panasonic/Sigma/Leica mirrorless, …just get this new Sigma!

Granted, it's got a maximum aperture of f/5, as opposed to the Panasonic which tops out at f/4, but it's got impressive weatherproofing, and its compatibility with Olympus's 2x Teleconverter MC-20 and 1.4x Teleconverter MC-14 means you can extend that colossal reach even further!
