About this deal

Lanois accentuated the gloom and submerged the album in a damp chill of effects pedals and reverb until Dylan seemed to be speaking to us from the beyond.

The extra discs yield the usual Bootleg pleasures: The Disc 2 version of “Cold Irons Bound” features stunning alternate lyrics about “stones in the pathway hurled” and “clouds of blood,” while the live versions of “’Til I Fell in Love With You” and “Standing in the Doorway” inflect the songs with sinewy hints of roadhouse blues, soul, gospel. Disc 4 offers live versions of all the tracks from Time Out of Mind except Dirt Road Blues, but with the addition of Mississipi, which was originally intended for the album. The 2022 remix of Time Out of Mind is sharper, crisper and live-sounding; the performances are more intimate and immersive. This set gets it right, consisting as it does of well over 60 minute discs but it also has more impact focussing on one album.

It wasn’t until the band stumbled into lockstep, all musicians’ frills burned away, that the song’s dark shadow loomed into view. The making of this album was protracted, painful, and in all ways alive, and the album’s dour countenance was largely the product of theater and shadow. Prior to its release, Dylan had been plagued by ill health – a life-threatening respiratory infection caused by inhaling fungus spores, which he put down to riding his Harley in the Louisiana swamps. Disc 4 contains live versions from the years 1998-2001 - I love live Dylan but for this period, I'm primarily interested in studio recordings, but the sound quality of these recordings seems underwhelming on first listen. This is one of the most highly anticipated Bootleg Series releases and it follows the evolution of songs written for the album, from intimate early incarnations in the previously unreleased 1996 Teatro sessions through incandescent live renditions showcasing Dylan and his touring ensemble channeling the songs on-stage from 1998-2001.Dylan’s voice is cleaner and more audible in the mix, which will please listeners who thought Lanois’ original production was too murky and swampy, and with too many effects on Dylan’s vocals. This edition includes a new 2022 remix, by Michael Brauer, of the eleven original recordings on Time Out Of Mind, sounding more like how the songs came across when the musicians originally played them in the room.

I don't know if they're entirely audience recordings or a combination of sources but I would have far preferred professionally recorded versions. There are too many times I've bought stuff that has "alternate versions" of songs, and invariably they're just alternate takes of the same song, no real noticeable differences. The vocals are more up front and overall it doesn't sound as polished as final product, which is not a bad thing.
