Recommended to pretty much everybody who's looking for a moving, first-class coming of age story. As long as you don't mind a side of straight-up weird to go along with it. It's been a couple of days, but I'm still unsure about this book. I was a fan of Inio Asano's Solanin, a story about twenty-somethings looking for identity, but did not like Nijigahara Holograph, a work of surreal psychological horror that I never connected to.

Goodnight Punpun ( Japanese: おやすみプンプン, Hepburn: Oyasumi Punpun) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Inio Asano. It was serialized in Shogakukan's Weekly Young Sunday between 2007 and 2008. Later in Weekly Big Comic Spirits from 2008 to 2013, its chapters were collected in thirteen tankōbon volumes. In North America, it was licensed for English release by Viz Media. The publisher is unconvinced by Sachi and Punpun's manga, disliking the main character's "needless" depression. While Shishido gets badly injured after being mistaken for a shoplifter, and ends up paralyzed for life, Punpun's childhood friends Seki and Shimizu, who stayed very close, drift apart as Shimizu joins a cult led by the mysterious and exuberant Pegasus. Punpun, having distanced himself from Sachi who is now continuing the manga on her own, starts using a fake name and acting like a completely different person to shield himself from his depression, but ends up running into Aiko by chance.

He sees a star move and rushes to show his uncle, daydreaming about winning the Nobel Prize for his discovery and colonizing this new star, Punpunia, with Aiko. Odmah potom usledilo je prepoznavanje i osećaj već viđenog. To su oni sićušni delovi svog odrastanja koje sam prepoznala u ovoj priči. Ali svako odrastanje je različito i priča za sebe. Punpun je dečak iz disfunkcionalne porodice koji kod kuće posmatra oca alkoholičara i nasilnika kako nasmrt prebija svoju ženu, Punpunovu majku. Za domaći dobija da napiše šta bi voleo da bude. Ali Punpun to još uvek ne zna, plaši se da prizna sebi ili nije otkrio. Voleo bi da se dopadne simpatiji, ali i drugarima. A te dve stvari u ovom slučaju ne idu zajedno. Tek treba da odluči kome treba da se dopadne i šta želi od života. Zato Punpun sebe vidi kao pticu, isto kao i svoje roditelje i srodnike. Punpun is real, but he's simply not there, not like the others are. He feels, thinks, lives on a different plane of existence and perception. His interactions are apparently normal: he has schoolmates, a family, a sweetheart, his own unlikely image of God appearing time and again in moments of distress. Except that the reader never sees him talking to anybody, except through indirect speech. There's a distance between Punpun and the others that words cannot seem to cross without losing the property of sound that makes them real. He does communicate, but it's a kind of communication whose form is as incongruous as his physical presence.After I've read this book, I couldn't help but search for books that are similar to it, so I read books created by the same author. Book after book (or manga after manga rather) I was faced with nothing but disappointment. Not a single one of those books came close to even half as good as Oyasumi Punpun. Without a doubt, this is one of the most enthralling manga series I’ve read. I’ve seen stories that attempt to capture the hardships and struggles of life, but Asano goes far beyond that in Goodnight Punpun. It’s not a story that’ll appeal to everyone, the idea of it is abstract and peculiar to some people, but I know others, including myself, were absolutely astonished by this manga. It is impactful, heartbreaking, beautiful, and it will shape you as a person, as it did with me. Mientras tanto, la mente pueril de Punpun se transmite con la misma gracia. No es de extrañar que el tono humorístico permee a cada escena, sea o no absurdo hasta puntos extremos. Desde el filtro subjetivo de un niño soñador que no sabe qué pinta en la vida ni qué puede hacer con ella, Asano se puede permitir insertar una gran dosis de humor que contrastará maravillosamente con la gravedad de las situaciones a medida que avance la trama. No recordaba gran parte de estos primeros capítulos (y para qué negarlo, mi memoria se ha reseteado para el resto también) y me he encontrado a mí mismo riendo a carcajadas con muchas escenas. El humor de Punpun es uno con el que hay que conectar para que funcione efectivamente. y por lo menos conmigo lo ha logrado. Desde el profesor hasta la enciclopedia médica, pasando por las pajas mentales (y físicas) que se monta Punpun, me cuesta recordar escenas donde no me haya partido la caja.

Retrieved March 31, 2022. the thing that i could actually relate to while reading this was how punpun felt lonely and alone as he was going through all the things happening to his life. that hit home for me. we may not share the same age but i do feel the same most of the time. i thought it wae great the author was able to capture that emotion. Punpun is about an innocent pigeon boy (in a class of human students) learning about the bees and the birds, life, and whatever else there is to know. How he remained so innocent in this world is anybody's guess.

Goodnight Punpun is a masterpiece. I highly recommend this manga to everyone, unless you suffer from severe depression, because this story isn’t the happiest one out there. It does involve vivid depictions of suicide, abuse, rape, etc. It's not for the faint-hearted readers. It's a solid 5/5 for me. Ressler, Karen (May 2, 2017). There, he opens up to her about his issues and Sachi accuses him of not wanting to actually find Aiko. After she pushes him, Punpun writes her a draft manuscript which she finds unsatisfactory. Sachi confides in Punpun that she used to be unconfident like him too, getting cosmetic surgery, so she has to keep pressuring him to try. Punpun resolves to keep working on the story and they work towards a final draft by the end of summer. Shishido offers to give Punpun a job once he gets a real estate license. After a misunderstanding, Punpun reveals to Sachi that he loves her, the two have sex and they start growing closer. A year later Sachi finishes the manga and prepares to show it to a publisher with Punpun.
