About this deal

I find the detectives to be pretty incompetent at times in this series. I know they don't have big city resources, but I think they are a little too dumbed down. They should be able to tell certain things about a crime scene, even if there is no CSI unit on hand. Overall the mystery was ok, but I honestly just didn't care. By the time I got to the end I was glad to be done with it. I'm hoping the next book is better, if not I will have to reevaluate whether or not I want to continue on with this series. Ann worked as a probation officer, bird observatory cook, and auxiliary coastguard before she started writing. She is a member of "Murder Squad," working with other British northern writers to promote crime fiction. Ann is also a passionate champion for libraries and was a National Libraries Day Ambassador in 2016. Ann lives in North Tyneside near where the Vera ... I haven't worked with Davy before, though I did come to Shetland with him and the script editor before he started writing and that gave us a chance to share ideas about the characters and the story. I think it's a very strong script, which captures the essence of the book. Permeated with place - Cleeves makes the Shetlands vivid in the reader's mind - and filled with a moral sensibility, Red Bones stands as a cautionary tale against letting the past fester into a lethal infection of the soul." Shetland is a beautiful, Nordic-type setting and the novel plays into this well using the setting in such a romantic, binding and visceral way, Lyric itself feels like a character more than just the surroundings or setting.

Ann Cleeves: Red Bones, the third book in the Shetland Quartet

I rate this book a solid 4 stars. The cover classes it as a thriller, but I thought it was more of a mystery than a thriller. A woman named Mima is killed one night on Whalsay Island, part of the Shetland Islands, Scotland. At first it is thought to be an accident, because a neighbor was out shooting rabbits at midnight in fog and accidentally shot her. But DI Jimmie Perez suspects that there is more to this and keeps digging. A second person is found dead, possibly suicide. Perez does solve the case, but the killer is not revealed until near the end, and the author left enough false clues, that I wasn't sure of the who or why until it all came together at the end. Ron Rash is renowned for his writing about Appalachia, but his latest book, The Caretaker, begins ... After a young archaeologist uncovers a set of human remains, the island settlers are intrigued. Is it an ancient find – or a more contemporary mystery? The biggest consideration when adapting a novel for TV is to get the essence of the story the writer wanted to get across even if you have to change certain parts of the plot. I created a new character - Tosh - to work with Perez, in the hope the warmth of their relationship would counter balance the darkness of the story. Shetland is the most remote place in the UK. It's a part our country but completely unique. It might be British but it's closer to Norway than to Edinburgh and it feels very different from the mainland.

Ann is the author of the books behind ITV's VERA, now in it's third series, and the BBC's SHETLAND, which will be aired in December 2012. Ann's DI Vera Stanhope series of books is set in Northumberland and features the well loved detective along with her partner Joe Ashworth. Ann's Shetland series bring us DI Jimmy Perez, investigating in the mysterious, dark, and beautiful Shetland Islands... Forget about solving all these crimes; the signal triumph here is (spoiler) the heroine’s survival. Featuring characters from the novels by award winning crime writer Ann Cleeves, and acclaimed worldwide, Shetland follows DI Ruth Calder, who replaces Jimmy Perez in series 8, and her team as they investigate crime within the close-knit island community. Stars — Cleeves writes elegantly & Detective Perez is an endearing character both for his skill and insight as a detective but more so his genuine nature, his willingness to have empathy as a person first, is refreshing. His attributes as a Father who’s there for his child when he can be and his constant struggle to balance that with his job are more real and human than many a detective ever displays in the loads of Literature out there focused on crime. Then, in the middle of the night, an elderly woman is shot dead. It appears to be a tragic accident, but Jimmy Perez is called to investigate.

Another suspicious death. The uncovering of a history where during the war a Norwegian resistance fighter disappeared mysteriously. How Sandy’s family was involved and how the dig started a tragic chain of events. I think one of the things I most love about her work, is that I never have any idea as to who the 'bad guy' might be. We get to know the characters intimately, their hopes, dreams and desires, their disappointments and frustrations, their family history. We can picture the setting down to the last mound of dirt, surging wave. We can feel the atmosphere she creates seep into our bones. A suspenseful, professional-grade north country procedural whose heroine, a deft mix of compassion and attitude, would be welcome to return and tie up the gaping loose end Box leaves. The unrelenting cold makes this the perfect beach read.

Red Bones

When the body of journalist Jerry Markham is found in a traditional Shetland boat, outside the house of the Fiscal, down at the marina, young Detective Inspector Willow Reeves is drafted in from the Hebrides to head up the investigation. Since the death of his fiancée, Inspector Jimmy Perez has been out of the loop, but his interest in this new case is stirred and he decides to help the inquiry. Ann Cleeves' fellow crime fiction practitioners (from Colin Dexter to Peter Robinson) have been lining up to sing her praises, and it's unlikely that there will be any blip in that chorus of praise on the evidence of Red Bones, which is quite as assured and entertaining as its predecessors,." Red Bones was adapted into a 2-part TV show that made up the first series of the of the Scottish television crime drama Shetland.

Well, Evelyn, what do you look like?' Mima said. 'On your hands and knees like some sort of beast. In this light you could be one of Joseph's pigs, grubbing around in the soil there. You be careful or he'll be slitting your throat and eating you as bacon.' She laughed so loud that she coughed and spluttered.Red Bones marks the third in a stellar suspense series set on the Shetland Islands from bestselling author Ann Cleeves--the basis for the hit BBC show Shetland, starring Douglas Henshall. MY THOUGHTS: In her own beautiful style, Cleeves takes a handful of unrelated threads: an archeology dig, the birth of a baby, the discovery of a skull, family feuds, and weaves them into a tapestry of intrigue. She is a master at the slow boiler, the novel that doesn't really appear to have much action but simmers slowly until it boils over at the climax. Her relationship with the archipelago began in 1975, when she took a job as assistant cook at the Fair Isle bird observatory. On Fair Isle Ann met her late husband Tim, a visiting ornithologist, and it was on a return trip that a single stark image provided inspiration for her first Shetland novel. Scott Shane's outstanding work Flee North tells the little-known tale of an unlikely partnership ... DISCLOSURE: I listened to the audiobook of Red Bones by Ann Cleeves, narrated by Kenny Blyth, published by Isis Publishing Co, via Overdrive. All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own opinions.
