About this deal

I know I have so many books that will sit unread and then I’ll find time to read and wish I had included them in this list. Children who are not diagnosed and treated for their neurodiverse conditions often have a dismal time at school: they know they feel different and don’t fit in, but they don’t understand why. It is from this book, which I have listened to numerous times now, recommended to EVERYONE, including my 9 year old’s school, I found ‘ Headstuff ADHD Therapy‘.

He has written many books, this one is co-authored by Dr Ratey told through their experiences with patients, both children and adults. My son now knows he has this superpower, which he’s OK with although would prefer teleporting as his superpower! I’ve been dismissive of ADHD and decided to listen to this book after the school has suggested my grandchild shows signs of it. Other feedback I received has also given high praise to this book and said how much this book has helped them recognise the signs and symptoms of ADHD in them.Short enough for a busy parent to actually read and use; utterly reliable and authoritative but never pedantic; wise, kind, and teeming with the chirping voices of children who have ADHD; this cornucopia of a book will feed you over and over again. For anyone coming into contact with ADHD kids, including moms, dads, brothers, sisters, nans, grandads, uncles and aunts, and professionals. I like to keep a book in my bag so if I’m stuck in the car outside a child’s swim club or piano lesson I can read for 20 mins. Subjects and strategies discussed include setting mutual goals; easing academic struggles; tackling everyday challenges which include tantrums to backchat. Although aimed at parents, it has something for everyone involved with ADHD kids: teachers, psychologists, doctors, and family.

She is a Counsellor who has combined type ADHD (moderate to severe) but was not diagnosed until she was 51! It broke her heart working with so many hundreds of diagnosed/undiagnosed ADHD teenagers and young adults who were good, kind people who had simply not been medicated properly and had allowed their ADHD risk-taking and thrillseeking to get the better of them. Sarah has worked in 4 English Prisons and Young Offender Units and been dismayed at the number of diagnosed but more often undiagnosed ADHD kids who end up behind bars. Sarah really does hit the nail on the head again and again in this easy to read book which explains things clearly, concisely and in a totally relatable way.Her book ‘How NOT to Murder your ADHD kid – Instead Learn how to be your child’s own ADHD Coach’ was released in April 2021.

My husband is now diagnosed, starting medication and has Greg as his Coach, who he describes as “one of the most decent human beings he has ever met”. I have started a private support group on Facebook for parents and carers who need support with their child with ADHD. The book gave me a great perspective on my children through the tidbits and observations of experience vs other books that are more textbooky. Amazing, really informative and useful book to help understand my ADHD child more than I thought I did.It explains that rather than seeing your child as misbehaving, view more that they simply haven’t developed the skills yet to deal with that particular situation. My husband will read it next then my parents and any other people who come into regular contact with my son will be asked to read it or I will send them key pages from it! Read on kindle and have now bought a paper copy so that I can flick back and forwards, make notes etc. I have to say I did cry because, whilst it was a long series of lightbulb moments, I felt so guilty that my child had struggled through secondary school, that I had saddled him with a very flaky counsellor who really didn’t get him, and angry also that a school, who had picked up on his short-term memory problems, had never once suggested ADHD.
