About this deal

Edge finder. Edge finders work by determining the edge of a stud by measuring the change in density of a wall while running the sensor across a surface. You usually have to run the tool in both directions multiple times to get accurate results.

A twist on other models that yields an easy and accurate experience that left our testers reaching for this on their own home projects The longer answer is a little more involved. Before stud finders were even a thing, construction workers used the “tap” method to locate studs. Simply put, they tapped on different sections of a wall and used the sound to determine if a section was hollow or connected to a stud. A hollow section of wall was obviously stud-free, and with their knowledge of stud spacing workers could more or less figure out where to drive nails. You can learn more about how to find will studs manually here. First, what do you really need the unit for? Homeowners hanging pictures don’t necessarily need a heavy-duty stud finder to hammer their nails. Likewise, a commercial contractor needs something with more sensitivity. As you might have noticed, however, is that there are literally hundreds of models of stud finders. And that doesn’t even take the higher end “wall scanner” models that do so much more. Did you know that new wall finders can scan for plastic pipes? Detect live wiring?I don’t recommend this technique. You’ll end up spending more time and money fixing unnecessary holes than you would have if you simply invested in a stud finder to start with. This model uses AAA batteries, so there’s a good chance you already have some on hand when it’s time to replace them. Pros All electronic stud finders use sensors to measure the change in density in the wall. Typically, you must place the stud finder on a part of the wall without studs to ensure it gets calibrated before sliding it across the wall to find studs. Once the finder locates a stud, the results are displayed on an LCD screen. StudPop was one of the first magnetic models to feature a super-strong magnet. On most walls, you can easily locate nails and screws and then lift your hand away while the Stud Pop stays put on the wall leaving both hands free to work. They’re available in a range of color choices.

With precision-laser technology and 7 specialized scanning modes, you get superior performance even up to 6” deep into dense spaces, including concrete and floors, regardless of whether walls are dry or not. And that’s fine. I’m not going to criticize something that works for others. At the same time, if I was a homeowner and a contractor needed to hang support for a heavy fixture, I wouldn’t trust the fact that they started tapping on the wall. If you’re the type of person that’s willing to spend a little more to save time and get better results, the Franklin ProSensor T6 is the best compact stud finder. Its small profile is easy enough to store in a drawer or toolbox until you need it, and its whole-stud detection meets the needs of full-time Pros. Scanning prowess. This feature determines the depth and accuracy of a model’s scans. Some stud finders can even locate studs in a 3-dimensional plane. The truth is that stud finders are going to keep your fixtures and pictures safely on your walls by allowing you to do your job right the first time. Tapping on walls to determine stud location is going to require that you know exactly how a hollow wall will sound and that you have a good idea of how studs are spaced. More importantly, tapping doesn’t really give you a sense of where wires and pipes might be… which is, of course, a huge safety concern. Unlike the other stud finders here, the DeWalt doesn’t show you the entire stud, just the centre of it. That cuts down on confusion or ambiguity as to whether you’re drilling into the heart of the stud, or perilously close to the edge. There’s no screen though, so you’ll have to watch the LEDs and listen for the buzzer – as you move closer to the target, the beeps will sound more rapidly, and the left and right arrows light up to show where the nearest stud is.

Center: Center finders use multiple sensors to gauge the stud’s entire width and provide you with the location of the center of the stud. The DeWalt DCT419S1 is one of the more popular stud finders from a reliable company. It scans for wood, both types of metal, plastic and lives electric – so a general all-rounder. Always remove any obstruction relative to the area you aim to work on, regardless of how proximal any rubbish or junk is to your chosen starting point. It may not have a display, but the multiple sensors and included magnetic stud finder allows you to cover more ground and work at a faster pace.Magnets can’t detect wooden studs outside of the metal contained inside them, and because of that locating wooden studs in a home proved difficult. While traditional stud finders locate the edge of the stud, this one locates the center for a more efficient read, even when held at an angle The shift from magnetic to electronic to sound also signal an advance in sensitivity and approach. Magnetic units will detect the metal in the studs, whereas electronic and ultrasonic units can detect shifts in density between studs and empty wall cavities while they also detect the metal present. Cheaper, less sophisticated stud finders are essentially small metal detectors, or even simply magnets, relying on finding nails in studwork. The problem with these stud finders is that it can be hard to distinguish between those nails and other metalwork, such as cables or water pipes. My review: The CH Hanson is simple. The StudBuddy is simpler. This little bullet can signal to you where a stud is, and not much else. This unit uses a magnetic sensor to locate studs, and does so with good accuracy and little calibration. This unit is very inexpensive, but a great addition to a small toolbox when you need something on hand.

Here we can see everything at once, not having to devote too much attention to one spot or one material at a time. Some more advanced stud finder models also include center-finding capabilities. These allow you to pinpoint the location of the stud edges and the center of the stud. Really good models will have a graphical interface that can show you where you are over the stud (whether it is center or edge), which makes mounting and hanging all the easier. Without the ability to electronically sense the sides and center, it’s important to get the stud finder level so you can more easily follow the stud. Of course, that assumes the stud itself is straight. We’ve seen some that are questionable in that department. This Old House has empowered homeowners and DIYers for more than four decades with top-notch home improvement advice in the form of television programs, print media, and digital content. It’s not available on Android, though. For that system, we couldn’t find one we could genuinely recommend you use. ProsIt has stronger magnets than many of its competitors, guiding you to the fasteners easily. It also has a rotating bubble level. Magnetic stud finders use neodymium, a rare earth metal, that oscillates and makes a buzzing sound when detecting dense material. Added to the finding capabilities it already has, the BullsEye also contains patented auto-leveling technology and interior line laser. That means it can locate studs, pinpoint a level orientation to an existing stud, and project a laser level across a wall for hanging and mounting. Using AA batteries for power, it’s capable of detecting the full width of wood or metal studs up to 1.7 inches deep, which is handy if you’re working on walls with more than the standard single sheet of drywall covering it. There’s an AC detector to let you know if there are live wires nearby and a built-in level to help you layout your markings straight. There’s even a pencil caddy to keep a pencil on board so you have one when you need it. Pros With a purpose-specific function, stud finders can last you a long time, given the proper care of course.
