About this deal

The festival, which was publicly music orientated was actually a celebration for Ian Stuart Donaldson, a white supremacist leader, on the anniversary of his death. Skrewdriver gigs were regularly the scenes of violent clashes, with their 1992 planned London concert becoming the “battle of Waterloo”, with hundreds of skinheads and anti-fascists fighting running battles on the streets. Skrewdriver was instrumental in setting up Blood and Honour, a network of bands promoting militant neo-Nazi ideas through music and concerts. However, John "Grinny" Grinton later stated in an interview that he had no problem with the new Skrewdriver, and that he became a member of the National Front along with Donaldson. [1]

The skinhead image was a “maybe in hindsight misconceived” fashion thing. It was cooked up by a bunch of us, including the band’s then management and the photographer Peter Kodik.” Over the past two weeks a number of well-known hatemongers had passed away, notably a Skrewdriver bass player, a reputed Proud Boy and an author that was supposed to speak at the 2021 American Renaissance Conference. Skrewdriver had initially toured as an apolitical punk band in the 70s but Pearce convinced Donaldson to relaunch the band in 1982 with a new line up and to promote the National Front’s agenda. Since his death he has become the icon of far-right skinhead groups, with concerts planned each year in commemoration, where white power bands perform in front of swastika banners with Third Reich memorabilia openly on sale. The organisation was at its peak in the late 80s and early 90s when there was a Nazi-skinhead revival, but its influence has waned in no small part to the quality of its music and its followers and due to a split in the 1990s that left the organisation almost dead in the water and some of its leading figures left the country to avoid the attentions of the Nazi terror group C18 with whom they had a row over finances.

The reformed Skrewdriver eventually became openly supportive of far right-wing groups, after a period of denying such claims. Donaldson eventually described himself as a neo-Nazi, saying: “I would describe myself as a British National Socialist, not a German one, and so don’t think I’m at odds with British patriots.” Every year around his death, White Power bands host different concerts across the world. The concerts are titled ISD Memorials. Both Blood and Honour and Combat18 are involved. Merv Shields died on 1 January 2022 due to COVID-19 complications. [22] Members [ edit ] Line-up [ edit ] We have uncovered evidence that right wing Canadian band Légitime Violence are due to headline this year’s Ian Stuart Donaldson (ISD) gig – the largest annual white power concert held in the UK.

There are 8-10 Blood and Honour concerts around the UK every year that attract normally less than 100 people. This was bigger but made up mainly of people from overseas who see coming to the UK and getting away with a concert here as a major result." Ian Stuart visiting Andreas J. Voigt and the Kreuzritter für Deutschland in Stuttgart, Germany, 1993 Last year saw hundreds of skinheads gather at a field near Northampton. It is expected that as many as 5,000 neo-Nazi sympathisers could make the trip this weekend for the secret 20th anniversary event in Upper Heyford. The ISD 2023 should be noted as being a gig that Ian Stuart himself would have recognised and would have immediately felt at home in the setting, the music and the crowd. This was a fitting tribute to the memory of Ian Stuart and a symbolic gesture of continuity and defiance towards those who would deny the opportunity to stage such an occasion and celebration of the man, his politics and his music. While Donaldson had drawn the most violent elements of the skinhead scene into Blood and Honour, on the streets around King’s Cross he often faced peril in the early 90s at the hands of militant anti-fascists.
