To make an effective insecticide spray, mix equal parts water and alcohol into a spray bottle and spray lightly over the plant – don’t drown it! When repotting a plant, use commercially prepared potting soil rather than soil from outdoors, which can be a source of pests. An organic insecticide, neem oil has seen a rise in popularity as a method to treat everything from insects through to fungi.
You just need 1/4 cup vegetable oil, 1 Tbsp liquid dish soap (one that doesn't contain bleach, degreaser, synthetic dyes, or fragrances), and water. In addition to this bug spray, you may want to use a bug zapper to help keep mosquitoes (and other bugs) from biting you. Wash and chop the peppers and put them in the blender or food processor with a cup of water. Blend until smooth. Root Ball Pests: Houseplants taken outdoors during the summer may have their root balls infested with pillbugs, millipedes, and slugs. These houseplant pests may cause minor feeding damage to root systems. They are generally found along the exterior of the root ball in small cavities carved from the potting mix. If you are growing a small indoor crop to supply your family with fresh veggies, use a methanol spray solution to stimulate them. Be careful which plants you spray the solution on as it has only been successfully tested on a specific group known as the C3 plants – tomato, peas, beans, beets, and sunflower, and then only when grown in a stress-free environment. The easiest way to kill light-scale infestations is by dipping a cotton swab into rubbing alcohol and dabbing it onto the scale. The process is tedious, but this method is effective. Prune disfigured leaves, branches, and twigs from the plant to prevent the scale from spreading. For houseplants that are taken outdoors, spray with insecticidal soap, neem oil extract, acetamiprid, imidacloprid, cyfluthrin, deltamethrin, or lambda cyhalothrin to control whiteflies. Less Common PestsUse a mild and biodegradable dish soap that does not contain bleach, ammonia, or other harsh chemicals.
