The sound had a special significance to the people of God ( they shall be a memorial for you before your God: I am the LORD your God). ii. “Israel, on the move from the Desert of Sinai (Numbers 10:12), was on a journey that in a few weeks could lead them into the conquest of the land of Canaan. This was a day not to be forgotten…. At last the Israelites were on their way to Canaan!” (Allen) vi. “The faith which Moses affirms so confidently stands in ironic contrast to what happens in the succeeding chapters: whereas Moses is sure God will do good to Israel, the people begin to complain of the evil (Numbers 11:1) that he is doing them. Moses prays that all God’s enemies will be scattered: the spies declare Israel will be defeated (Numbers 13). This chapter’s triumphant conclusion deepens the poignant tragedy of the succeeding scenes.” (Wenham)

The sound was made by someone called, cleansed, sanctified and anointed ( The sons of Aaron, the priests, shall blow the trumpets). As the century progressed, and especially from 1960 onwards, we find that Britain’s Prime Ministers became more believing.

A brilliant, fascinating, surprising, sometimes touching parade of nineteen believers, heretics, agnostics, atheists, mystics, astrologers, bigots and Bible-thumping pagans: enlightening and entertaining from start to finish. - Brendan Walsh The depth of the faith of Stanley Baldwin may surprise some. That of Harold Macmillan and Alec Douglas-Home rather fewer. Of Harold Wilson’s congregational upbringing we are left with the impression that it fused with the Scout Movement’s sense of duty to one’s fellow human beings. Of James Callaghan, we hear of the early and intense Baptist faith and the fellowship which sustained him and his widowed mother through poverty but is said to have fallen away in the face of a socialist education. But it is surely suggestive that Callaghan chose a quotation from Ecclesiastes 9:11 for his autobiography, Time and Chance.

BGT Numbers 10:10 καὶ ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις τῆς εὐφροσύνης ὑμῶν καὶ ἐν ταῖς ἑορταῖς ὑμῶν καὶ ἐν ταῖς νουμηνίαις ὑμῶν σαλπιεῖτε ταῖς σάλπιγξιν ἐπὶ τοῖς ὁλοκαυτώμασιν καὶ ἐπὶ ταῖς θυσίαις τῶν σωτηρίων ὑμῶν καὶ ἔσται ὑμῖν ἀνάμνησις ἔναντι τοῦ θεοῦ ὑμῶν ἐγὼ κύριος ὁ θεὸς ὑμῶν When they blow both of them, all the congregation shall gather before you at the door of the tabernacle of meeting. But if they blow only one, then the leaders, the heads of the divisions of Israel, shall gather to you. When you sound the advance, the camps that lie on the east side shall then begin their journey. When you sound the advance the second time, then the camps that lie on the south side shall begin their journey; they shall sound the call for them to begin their journeys. And when the assembly is to be gathered together, you shall blow, but not sound the advance. The sons of Aaron, the priests, shall blow the trumpets; and these shall be to you as an ordinance forever throughout your generations. Brian Bell entitles Nu 10:1-13 "Cleared for Take Off!" - Like travelers on a long layover, they’ve been now cleared for take off. Each knew his standard, his tribe, his role, his appointed place. The soul must visit Sinai, but not live there! It must journey forth to Hermon, Olivet, Calvary. The slumbering church should hear the trumpet call today, & move out & evangelize the world. Time to set out for their God-appointed inheritance. This would take them through an unknown land, a dangerous land, but God would give them the help they needed.
