The Chilis most recent tour, promoting their Greatest Hits album, climaxed in two performances in Hyde Park (on the 19th and 20th of June I believe), a huge park in the centre of London, to audiences of around 80,000 people. This is the Red Hot Chili Peppers first live album in their career, even though they have been hailed as one of the greatest live bands ever, but will not be released in America. But mostly the songs are excellent, with particularly blistering performances of Give it Away (which would make a good finale, if it weren't slowed by John's effects twiddling at the end) and Get On Top. Kiedis is also getting much better at performing ballads like Otherside and Under The Bridge, which he looked and sounded fairly uncomfortable with on previous Concert DVDs such as "Off The Map". When they do get around to playing their own songs it is largely listenable, but nothing would beat being in the crowd, especially not the way that this recording was mixed down. The Chili Peppers are, at their heart, just four musicians on a stage, and sometimes you can hear the vast disparity between the size of the venue and the tiny little band playing without distortion or performance enhancing effects. In addition, the crowd never seem to stop whooping and cheering and shouting, even though almost every one of them has paid a lot of money to hear the music they're drowning out. Unlike the live DVD Live at Slane Castle, which is an inspired thrill ride of improvised music bleeding into enhanced renditions of some of the Chili's best loved songs, this feels like we are dropping in on the Red Hots on an off day, when something just isn't gelling. It also manages to rattle on for an extra twenty minutes longer than the Slane Castle gig which, sitting at home or standing in a field, is quite a long time. There are 4 songs that were also performed but are not included on this release, "I Like Dirt" and "My Lovely Man" were both performed on June 19, "Maybe" (The Chantels cover) on June 20 and "Mini-Epic (Kill for Your Country)" on June 25. The band run through plenty of the old standards, playing less and less of their old material, unfortunately, taking songs mainly from their most recent two albums, By The Way and Californication. The performances are, as always, top class with each band member on top form. Frusciante, Flea and Smith perform their trademark jams in between most songs and John's solo improvisations always keep within the tone of the song while being wildly original, often differing greatly from the original recordings. Although, Flea does not receive these opportunities, his mid-song nuances are always fun to listen for and Smith's interludes are always nice to break the action up a little.
