About this deal

Clynelish 23 yo 1995/2018 (54.5%, Signatory Vintage, refill sherry butt, cask #8674, 266 bottles) - 140219 Clynelish 29 yo 1965/1994 (52.1%, Whyte & Whyte for the Spirits Library, USA, sherry cask, cask #667, 750ml) - 280723 Equinox & Solstice 10 yo 2010/2021 'Candlekitty' (48.5%, Decadent Drinks, summer edition, first fill barrels, 973 bottles) - 210921 Clynelish 9 yo 2011/2020 (60.1%, Single Cask Nation, refill bourbon, cask #800315, 244 bottles) - 011220

Mouth: feels fuller than 46%, but slightly less complex than the nose. A nice waxy / creamy texture, mixed with nutty notes, briney touches and a sweet toffee edge. Orchard fruits and lemons. Orange peel. Light herbal honey, oak spice and leather. A hint of buttery cocoa as well. Clynelish 18 yo 1996/2015 (56.1%, The First Editions, Author’s Series, refill hogshead, cask #HL11170, 243 bottles) - 090616Palate: This is strange. Odd. Peculiar. And completely unexpected. The overwhelming tasting note on my first sip was… Watermelon jolly ranchers? There’s a mouth-watering candied fruit thing going on here that can only be likened to those infamous hard candies of my youth. There was cherry, lemon-lime soda, pear, and artificial melon flavors all melding together. As I continue to sip, the candied flavors settle down and evolve into deeper, richer flavors of light peat, honeydew, and floral notes. The mouthfeel leans more to the creamy, waxier side of the spectrum, providing good body on the palate without feeling soft. There is only the slightest bite and remains overall quite restrained even at 46% ABV.

A Highland Distillery 10 yo 2010/2020 (58.4%, Watt Whisky, 280 bottles) - 011220 - by Angus - 131120 Clynelish 2008/2019 (53.3%, Riegger’s Selection, Ice wine cask finish, cask #800191, 294 bottles) - 200519 Clynelish 30 yo 1972/2003 (50%, Douglas Laing ‘Old Malt Cask’, cask #14747, 126 bottles) - by Angus - 160520 Finish: long sweet finish with continuing maltiness, chestnut flavour, and with a slightly bitter aftertaste. Lynch Isle 20 yo 2000/2020 (53.3%, North Star, sherry butt & Portuguese brandy butt finish, 693 bottles) - by Angus - 130321I ended up meeting the owner of the place, who was sitting at the table next to mine. He happens to be very dear friends with a one Jim Murray. Go figure. We got to talking, and before long we were talking about tasting, nosing, life experiences, and everything of the sort over some drams of his chosing. Truly a splendid time.

Palate: Wonderful! Refreshing and lively. Lots of floral notes coming through, and even a little spice on the tongue. I had my expectations set a little bit too high before testing this whisky. It is not bad. Not bad at all.. But not stellar nor enchanting. Taste: I'm not really sure where to begin. For me it is a bit complex. Smoke (but not too heavy which I enjoy), definite sea salt, floral or grass(?). The more I sip the more sweetness I notice.A second distillery, also named Clynelish, is built next-door. A year later, the original distillery is mothballed Clynelish 9 yo 2010/2019 (58.6%, Elixir Distillers, Whisky Trail, Jazz Series, bourbon, cask #700041, 245 bottles) - 270819 Nose: Immediately after opening salty coastal notes invade the nasal cavity. With a little time the coastal notes relax allowing spicy dried citrus peels (tangerine and lemon) to take the wheel. Freshly cut green apples and notable floral notes are gently peppered with barbecue smoke. A very likable nose. Some layers, not too simple and not too complex.

Fresh green fruit and unripe melon on the nose, sweet almost fizzy lemon sherbet on the palate, a wispy hint of peat and pepper, and satisfying and balanced finish." Distilled in Sutherland 20 yo 2000/2020 (53.2%, Thompson Bros for MPC Lab Taiwan, 309 bottles) - 011220 Clynelish 19 yo 1995/2014 (51.7%, The Whisky Agency, Liquid Library, hogshead, 295 bottles) - 010115This is my own personal bottle that I opened in October of 2013, and as of April it is about half full. I have tasted this bottle on 5 occasions with notes (83, 86, 86, 85, 83). The following represents my overall impression of this bottle as it relates to six different Brora’s tasted one night in April. Clynelish 20 yo 1997/2018 (44.6%, Exclusive Malts, refill ex-sherry hogshead, cask #6897, 52 bottles) - by Angus - 201018 Clynelish 32 yo 1990/2022 (45.8%, Signatory Vintage, Cask Strength Collection, bourbon barrel, cask #3507, 115 bottles) - 121023 Clynelish’s ultimate success –indeed cult status –is one which came out of human tragedy. This is one of a number of ‘Clearance’ distilleries (Talisker is another example) which appeared in the earlier part of the 19th century. This was a period when some landowners, seeing the profits which could be made from sheep farming, forcibly moved their tenant farmers from their ancestral lands. Caithness and Sutherland were the scenes of the most brutal of these clearances, the perpetrators The Duke (and especially Duchess) of Sutherland and their estate managers. I must say that this whisky does keep you waiting. So the best approach to Clynelish 14 is to give it time to open up in the bottle. It really does wonders.
