About this deal

Though all elements are extremely strong, the design work by Giles Cadle is just awe-inspiring with a multitude of universes and locations created by a stunning set which utilises the full capacity of the revolving and rising drum of the Olivier in a way I could never have imagined.

Travel between the worlds with Lyra and Will in this epic adaptation of Philip Pullman's famous trilogy: Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass. Marisa Coulter is the beautiful and manipulative mother of Lyra, and the former lover of Lord Asriel. The novels have won a number of awards, including the Carnegie Medal in 1995 for Northern Lights and the 2001 Whitbread Book of the Year for The Amber Spyglass.I have to disagree with my friend Stuart, though, about whether the play seems less anti-religion than the books.

The rose window on the north side of the transept is the most beautiful of the cathedral's ancient windows. Lyra loses her ability to intuitively read the alethiometer and determines to learn how to use her conscious mind to achieve the same effect.Based on Philip Pullman’s trilogy, His Dark Materials, this brilliant adaptation by Nicholas Wright is a play in two parts.

A two-play dramatisation of Philip Pullman's extraordinary award-winning fantasy trilogy, first seen at the National Theatre.I managed to look in on some of the puppet work at the end of the evening, and even had a go myself.

On a cerebral plane, the plays are a constantly evolving thesis on the nature of humanity and the meaning of faith.I can imagine the live production being quite a spectacle, especially for children, but the books were much more than that and a good amount of that deeper reflection is sadly lost here. He also co-judged the prestigious Christopher Tower Poetry Prize (awarded by Oxford University) in 2005 with Gillian Clarke. The main scene this morning took a while to set up but it was to the credit of the director and the script that the moment when the Alethiometer is produced became quite magical. The play was successful and was revived (with a different cast and a revised script) for a second run between November 2004 and April 2005.
