Lagavulin Scotch was one of the six whiskies marketed as part of the ‘Classic Malts of Scotland’ when it was launched in 1988, and that only increased the demand. The Lagavulin distillery’s spirit stills are actually larger than the wash stills, along with a 4.4 ton stainless steel mash tun. Lagavulin always bottles something for the Islay Jazz Festival and 2018 was no exception. This one was matured in first-fill American oak barrels, refill American oak hogsheads, and European oak puncheons. In the realm of Scotch whisky, Lagavulin is as iconic as the island it’s distilled on. In fact, it’s one of the oldest distilleries found in the heart of Islay — even predating some of its ultra-famous neighbors. Its complex origins involving illegal production and smuggling make for an interesting story, but what sets this Scotch apart from giants like The Macallan and The Balvenie is its distinct flavor. Lagavulin is one of the great distilleries—you can’t convince me otherwise. While it doesn’t reach the highs of 1960s Bowmore and Laphroaig, there came a point when it started to surpass both of those distilleries. Of course, there’s great Bowmore and Laphroaig from the 1990s and 2000s arounds, but Lagavulin outperforms either in those eras. I know that’s just my opinion, but it almost feels like fact.When John and I first tasted the Lagavulin 16 yo whisky, we looked at each other and frowned. It did not live up to our expectations. We felt that it was a bit one dimensional and boring. Lagavulin is one of a trio of distilleries sat on the south coast of Islay. Lagavulin produces some of the smokiest whisky Scotland has to offer, with the Lagavulin 16 Year Old standing as their most storied expression. Originally released as a distillery exclusive for Islay's 2021 Jazz Festival, this 13-year-old single malt was matured in refill American oak casks, before finishing in casks that previously held mezcal! A jazzy release indeed, limited to just 3,000 bottles. We were looking forward to sampling this new expression of Lagavulin as the Islay distillery has long been one of our favourites. It delivers everything that we want from a smoky whisky, and Lagavulin in particular - classy and expressive smoke, vibrant green fruits and delicious sweetness. Peat and smoke with hints of vanilla, sea salt and citrus sweetness. It is not overwhelming but inviting and intriguing.

Lagavulin has a more oily mouthfeel than the Ardbeg; however, the oiliness also seems to capture some raw alcohol notes.No it's wise I suppose this has to be considered the smoke here scotches but it's not like I get a ton of smoke off the nose... It's like a fine rich spicy wine...
