About this deal

Sadly, in its current use by the UK government, it no longer appears to be a step in the right direction. Taking centre stage was BECCS because at the time this was the only way climate-economic models could find scenarios that would be consistent with the Paris Agreement. Here in the UK, and in several countries of the European Union, we have the madness of a legally-enforcible and self-imposed commitment to reaching 'net zero carbon emissions' produced from our territory (but not as a locus of consumption, so it's OK to consume materials, food and goods produced more pollutingly abroad .

Just as important, by 2009 it was becoming increasingly clear that it would not be possible to make even the gradual reductions that policy makers demanded. There is simply not enough available land on the planet to accommodate all of the combined corporate and government “net zero” plans for offsets and Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) tree plantations. They give the illusion that corporations are taking serious action to tackle the climate crisis when, in reality, they are sweeping the problem under the carpet and leaving it to others and future generations to clean up their mess. As a sustainability expert I believe most of the chapters have more or less valid points except the one of agriculture and vegan food which was not convincing. In many fonts the character for zero (number "0") and the letter "O" have slightly different shapes. However, not being a zealot, I found Ross Clark's book not only very readable but rational and well-argued. Among the major emitters, both the United States and the European Union have promised to achieve this goal by 2050, while China intends to become carbon-neutral before 2060.

The only thing that will be achieved is that the government of the day will be perpetually inundated with legal actions taken by environmental groups whenever they think the government is taking a step in contravention to this legal obligation.Nevertheless, they are sometimes used as such in American English; for example, "aught" as a placeholder for zero in the pronunciation of calendar year numbers. They allowed modellers to link economic activity to the climate by, for example, exploring how changes in investments and technology could lead to changes in greenhouse gas emissions. Rather, it has been shown to be a weasel word, the latest corporate greenwash given currency by many well-intentioned users (including us). Credible Government plans exist for over a third of the UK’s required emissions reductions to meet the Sixth Carbon Budget in the mid-2030s; with a fair wind we will manage another quarter; and over a third cannot be relied on to deliver the necessary emissions reductions. The issue is that we know that 'fossil fuels must stay in the ground', subsidies must end, regulations enforced etc - however these are all difficult things to achieve.
