About this deal

MicroSD card storage. Pricier dash cams bundle a storage card. Some come with larger cards, and some budget models come without. There are often bundles available with the card. Some cameras opt for hard-wired internal storage, like the Miofive 4K. You don’t get the driver assistance systems of other dash cams, so it’s up to you or your vehicle to spot speed cameras and potential collisions. That said, you still get Wi-Fi and GPS connectivity, and we like that Vantrue has focused on video quality over unnecessary extras. In our tests, the front camera’s footage was generally good enough in most scenarios. Viofo utilizes Sony Starvis image sensors, which perform well in low-light conditions. The lower resolution does compromise quality in subpar driving situations though, with fuzzy detail putting it behind the best 4K competitors. The interior and rear cameras offer a wide 170-degree field of view, and the interior camera is equipped with six LEDs for infrared capabilities. Even in the darkest driving conditions, visibility inside the car remained clear in our tests. Using a dash cam is generally legal in both the UK and the US. In fact, certain bodies in both countries actively encourage the use of dash cams to reduce insurance premiums. That said, there are a few basic rules to follow to ensure your dash cam usage stays on the right side of the law. Many dash cams now come in single- or dual-camera versions, with the dual cam version fitting in a second camera into the main unit, or including a smaller camera that you can fit to the rear windscreen. Some even include three cameras, with one recording the view through the windscreen, another the view through the rear windscreen, and a final camera recording what’s going on inside the car – often with infrared lighting for visibility after dark.

Joining it is a tiny rear camera that records 2K video at 30fps. Like the forward unit, it covers a 140-degree field of view. That’s enough for the view front and rear, but rivals offer wider angles. Still, with a generous 128GB of internal storage, you get twice as much capacity as the previous Miofive 4K, with space for around 8 hours of record time before loop recording will start to overwrite the oldest clips. However, 4K footage takes up a lot of space. Each one-minute portion of video captured by the Miofive weighs in at about 250mb when transferred to a smartphone, which means the integrated 64GB of storage is good for 4.5 hours of recording. This should be plenty, but the large size of 4K files is worth considering if you intend to record a lot of footage and transfer files frequently. Verdict This is an excellent dash cam for the price, with first-rate 4K UHD day and night captures, GPS, and 64GB of internal storage. We also like the friendly voice notifications. Dual-channel support: This is what you’ll need if you want to run both front and rear, or interior (cabin-view) cameras. Interior cameras are generally situated on the dash cam, but rear cameras are separate and require additional cabling. OBD-II 12-volt power (better): Outliers like the Owl and PureCam use the OBD-II connector for constant 12-volt power. OBD-II-to-USB power cables are now available separately (as an alternative to hardwiring kits that draw constant 12-volt power from the wiring harness).I recommend one with a USB Type-A port, which will accommodate any dash cam. Most of those with captive cables I’ve seen are mini-USB. The only downside is a long cable run, as the OBD-II port is usually next to the driver’s left knee, under the dash.

With the understanding that virtually every dash cam is typically installed in front of (or rather, behind) the rear-view mirror, keeping it well out of the driver's eyeline, the MioFive adopts the size and shape of a standard rear-view mirror. Seems logical: is.

Crowd-funded Miofive 4K dash cam is smartly designed, has 64GB of storage, and connects to a phone with speedy 5GHz wi-fi

Key specs – Max video recording resolution: 1080p, 30fps; Field of view: 140°; Extra features: Accelerometer, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth To stop important clips from being overwritten, many of the best dash cams can automatically detect potential incidents and flag the relevant footage to protect it from deletion. Most models with loop recording also allow you to manually tag clips with the same effect, generally by way of a shortcut button on the body of the dash cam. How we test dash cams Infrared lighting is important if you want to assure good captures ofnocturnal events inside the cabin of your vehicle. Beyond this, there are a fantastic set of features, including built-in GPS with logging of position and speed, time-lapse parking recording, and automatic detection and protection of impact events – East Devon’s superb collection of potholes gave me ample chance to try this out. For many of us, a three-camera setup won’t be worth the hassle, but if you want to protect your ability to drive for work, you won’t find a better bundle. We were happily surprised by the video quality. The cameras can record Full HD footage in both directions, capturing video that’s smooth, sharp and clear, matched by decent audio. The interior camera occasionally struggles in bright sunlight, but that’s a small criticism of otherwise impressive performance. The front camera can also go solo to shoot in even more detailed 1440p.
