About this deal

Suspicious of Lilith, the jealous wife of the theatre owner sends dresser Jenny to spy on her, and desperate for the money to help her family, Jenny agrees. What Jenny finds is a woman as astonishing in her performance as she is provocative in nature. Organisational changes in the Velen section of the walkthrough to reflect the increased level of Griffin School Gear.

You are Geralt of Rivia, a professional monster-hunter known as a Witcher. You’ve fully regained your memories since your miraculous revival and escape from the Wild Hunt, and have cleared your name of the false accusations of regicide. In the wake of the assassination of Foltest, king of Temeria, the north have been rent by warfare as Nilfgaard launches its third major invasion, and the northlands have been united under the insane king Radovid. Overshadowing these petty politics is the mysterious return of Ciri - Geralt’s adopted daughter, who is now being pursued by the Wild Hunt.Once inside the theatre, Jenny discovers that this is going to be more than just a simple job of dressing and reporting activities to Mrs Dyer. Whilst Lilith is not the kindest of people Jenny soon finds herself ‘bewitched’ by her and wonders if she has fallen in too deep. As more and more tragedy befalls the theatre Jenny begins to question who the enemy really is and is the curse of Melpomene true? The book is constructed around a series of plays, each one forming an "Act" of the novel. I'm sure there's some very in depth analysis that could be done around the choice of plays and how they drive the plot of the story, but for me they just felt like they fit it really well. The different tragedies staged in the Mercury showed us different aspects of our stars as things grew progressively more perilous and frightening. Set in Far North Queensland in a small town surrounded by tropical rainforests which are dark, deep and dank with moisture and humidity; heaving with mystery and omens of people hearing the rainforest whispering and falling from the boulders overlooking flowing water, this town has so many people with so many secrets that seem to be oozing out as the wet season hits with a possible cyclone on the way. Windy, wet, humid and hot. What a superb location for a crime mystery. Omg then she decides that she is going to just go into town to buy food. Like what??? She's hiding out and she's going to into town and possibly run into one of the men that was looking for her but she doesn't know what they look like. How stupid. Why is Darcy writing this???

This is my first book by Purcell, but it’s safe to say it wont be my last. I’ve never quite felt as transported when reading historical gothic novels as I did with The Whispering Muse. Her atmospheric writing style wholly brings the theatre and the characters who inhabit it to life. Her use of the different parts of the book, each part focusing on a different play, was exceptionally done. Each part, and with it, each play seems to perfectly capture the atmosphere and feelings not only of the story but of the characters themselves, and the use of foreshadowing was just *chefs kiss.* I also enjoyed the mythological element. It was spooky without being outright fantasy, but had enough of the element to keep me on my toes, wondering whether the muse, Melpomene, was actually causing Liliths bizarre behaviours, or whether it was her obsession with needing to become a star so bright no one could ever forget her. Mrs Dyer is an interesting character, on the surface she appears the victim, an unloved wife whose husband frivolously spends her wealth, a woman scorned who desperately wants to protect her daughter and seeks a confidant in Jenny. Though her actions are not quite genuine, her jealousy permeates and her generosity towards Jenny only signals manipulation, her kindness causing Jenny guilt and a sense that she owes Mrs Dyer a great debt. Mrs Dyer claims that Lilith is the deceiver, the thorn in her side, yet Mrs Dyer is also Jenny’s thorn. Mrs Dyer is ruthless and is arguably more akin to Lady Macbeth than Lilith is. Yet perhaps in a patriarchal society these three women need a touch of Lady Macbeth in them just to survive. The Whispering by Veronica Lando was published in Australia by Harper Collins and is now available. Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things): Amendments to bookings made for dates of stay / reduction in the number of people will be subject to availability of rooms and cancellation policy of the Hotel.
