About this deal

The book Parenting Hell sees Rob and I share the challenges and madness of our parenting journeys with lashings of empathy and extra helpings of laughs. As a Mother who suffers terribly from Mum guilt and is constantly worrying I am doing things wrong, I found this book to be very honest and a great reassurance that all parents think and feel the same. It probably is quite amusing for a 20-something gal who wants to be childless forever to be so entertained and attached to a podcast (and subsequent book) about parenting.

The book dives into more of Rob and Josh's personal lives, into how they were parented and what their partner thinks about them. Join Josh and Rob as they share the challenges and madness of their parenting journeys with lashings of empathy and extra helpings of laughs. From only having four people in his year at school, to living in a family home where they didn’t just not bother to lock the front door, they didn’t even have a key. I would say there there is a lot more seriousness in the book than the podcast but still humorous and it was also great to have the addition from the family and see how parenting changes across the generations but at the crux of it all…it is all about the children and them being happy. I have been waiting to read for a while, but I wanted to listen to the audiobook over a physical book.

Using a different television show of the time as its starting point for each chapter Watching Neighbours Twice a Day… is part-childhood memoir, part-comic history of 90s television and culture. I laughed out loud many times and once had to go into another room because I thought I might wake my sleeping husband. This was selected as the first read for a parent book club I joined (appropriately) and it was really funny and quite endearing at times. It will discuss everything from the BBC convincing him that Michael Parkinson had been possessed by a ghost, to Josh’s belief that Mr Blobby is one of the great comic characters, to what it’s like being the only vegetarian child west of Bristol.

The reason as to why I gave the book 3 stars is that even though it was hilarious, I just didn’t relate to it whatsoever as I don’t have children.I also loved listening to Michaels bit but will end my day remembering Michael describe Josh as a "tender lover". though admittedly I started listening before becoming a teacher due to being a fan of Josh Widdicombe and Rob Beckett). As previously when I read a book that was based around the podcast, I found it a different expereince and I didn't enjoy. Now we have been given a book deal it is probably the time for me to admit to myself that complaining for an hour a week to Rob about my life has become the most successful thing I have done in 14 years in comedy. I really enjoyed the book--- I have never laughed so hard whilst reading but there are hard warming and reassuring moments that I teared up during.

This is a book about growing up in the ’90s told through the thing that mattered most to me, the television programmes I watched. And just when they thought it couldn't get any harder, why didn't anyone warn them about the slices of unmatched euphoric joy and pride that occasionally come piercing through, drenching you in unbridled happiness in much the same way a badly burped baby drenches you in milk-sick?It's a collection of funny anecdotes, a nice light-hearted read that you'll love if you enjoy the podcast! I think I missed the purpose of the book and downloaded it as I had spare audible credits to use up. I think this is a must read for any new parent who is thinking that well repeated line…’have children they said, it will be fun they said’…of course it is but this book demonstrates we all need that reassurance once in a while that it will really all be ok and you are not alone. So funny listening to Rose and Lou's take on parenting and I would 100% listen to them doing a podcast in their own right - move over you sexy, relatable beasts.
