About this deal

Plato was brought up in the San Fernando Valley. When she was three, her new parents separated, and she lived with her mother. At an exceptionally young age, Plato started going to tryouts with her mom and age seven. She started showing up in T.V. ads, allegedly showing up in more than 100 ads. 6. At a very young age, Plato began attending auditions with her mother, and at seven years old had appeared in over 100 television commercials. [11] Plato was also an accomplished figure skater. During her years on Diff'rent Strokes, Plato struggled with drug and alcohol problems; she admitted to drinking alcohol, using cannabis and cocaine, and suffering an overdose of diazepam when she was aged 14. [10] Plato had lost her husband, her mother, her child and her fortune all in a matter of years. So she may not have been in her right mind when, in 1991, she entered a video store, pointed a pellet pistol at the cashier and demanded all the money. The terrified cashier handed over the cash, and after this desperate cry for help, Plato was on the run. Plato was under a lot of stress due to her mother’s passing and the separation from her husband. Bogged down by money issues, she signed her power of attorney to an accountant. It was a way for Plato to focus on healing from her losses without having to think or care about her financial situation. This was a huge mistake. Her accountant dealt her the greatest betrayal.

In 1990, Plato was getting ready to appear on the Sally Jessy Raphaël Show for a segment on child actors. Plato was also there for her own reasons: to let the world know she was clean and off drugs. But was she? Another guest on the episode, Paul Peterson—who fights for the rights of child actors—saw Plato leave the washroom with a certain powder all around her nose. Oops. Of course, they end up in bed together. There are candles all around, and they're both naked. "It feels good to cuddle like this, doesn't it?" Landon asks. Dana starts petting her hair... But this scene is disappointing, too. Landon runs her fingertip over Dana's arm. Dana drags her fingertips across her breasts. There's a kiss. Dana pets her hair again. Kiss. Kiss. Oboe. And that's it. Dana’s new parents were Dean and Florine Plato, and they gave her a new last name and a new home in the San Fernando Valley. However, they were far from perfect. For Florine Plato, Dana became more of project than anything else: she was determined to groom the little girl into a star. Finn, Natalie (April 13, 2020). John Drew Barrymore took things a little lightly, or so it seemed, when he was offered a role in the ‘60s in Star Trek and failed to show up to the sets. The convenience store incident, working in a dry cleaners, and then a softcore parody of Diff’rent Strokes—it all added up to one thing: Plato wasn’t thinking rationally. In this same vein was Plato’s second marriage. The groom was producer actor Scott Atkins a.k.a Scotty Gelt. You know there's going to be trouble when there’s an a.k.a. after a name, and the marriage only lasted a month before they annulled it. Still, Plato hadn’t given up on love...although maybe she should have. In 1988, Plato lost two loved ones in a single week. She and her husband decided to separate just as her mother lost her fight with a brutal illness. Doctors had previously diagnosed Plato’s mother with scleroderma—a rare skin disease—and after she succumbed, Plato was alone all over again. In one fell swoop, Plato suddenly had no husband, no mother, and no job.

On May 8, 1999, Plato and Menchaca were returning to California and stopped at Menchaca's mother's home in Moore, Oklahoma, for a Mother's Day visit. [10] Later on in the visit, Plato said that she felt unwell and took a few doses of a hydrocodone / acetaminophen painkiller (Lortab), along with the muscle-relaxant carisoprodol (Soma), [47] and went to lie down with Menchaca inside her Winnebago motor home, which was parked outside the house. [10] Upon waking up, Menchaca and the family discovered that Plato had died in her sleep – initially assumed an accidental overdose but later ruled a suicide based on Plato's long history of substance use. [48] [49] [50] [51] Some of Plato's friends, including her former Diff'rent Strokes costar Todd Bridges, have publicly disagreed with the ruling. [52] Plato's body was cremated and her ashes were scattered over the Pacific Ocean. [53] The Making of Night Trap" (PDF). Archived from the original (PDF) on April 3, 2014 . Retrieved April 17, 2022. Although Plato’s mother just wanted to make sure she was normal, Plato later said that her mother kept her in a bubble and that she never taught her about “reality and life skills.” Indeed, Florine was so paranoid about her daughter, she was afraid someone would kidnap her. Turns out mom should’ve been watching out for trouble closer to home.
