About this deal

The name Haribo comes from the first two letters of the given name and surname of the company's founder, Hans Riegel, and the town he lived in, Bonn. HA-RI-BO The Riegel brothers transformed their father’s company into a candy superpower, expanding its product line and upping the number of employees from just 30 after the war to about 1,000 in 1950. As Haribo continued to grow in the 1950s and ’60s, executives capitalized on new marketing tools, including television. “The brand was one of the first in Germany to do advertisements on television,” says Bahlmann, “so that made [Haribo] and the product really popular.” Opdenhövel, Matthias; Hugendubel-Doll, Steffi (2012). Flipflops, iPod, Currywurst: Wer hat's erfunden?. Munich: cbj Kinderbücher Verlag. pp.124–125. ISBN 978-3-570-13621-8. Swiss chocolatier, Lindt & Sprüngli AG and Haribo GmbH & Co. were involved in a 3-year long dispute regarding trade mark infringement by three-dimensional chocolate bears. Haribo considered that Lindt's bear-shaped chocolates were infringing Haribo’s trade mark “Goldbären” (Gold Bear). Haribo, which invented gummy bears in the 1920s, stated that consumers are likely to get confused between the two, even if Lindt’s products are made of chocolate while Haribo’s gummy bears are a jelly sweet.

At regional level, the court decided in favour of Haribo and prohibited sales of Lindt’s bear-shaped chocolates. On appeal, the court’s decision was overruled and and the ruling granted in favour of Lindt, stating that the two products bore no similarity. It was held that chocolate teddies cannot be confused with Haribo’s jelly sweets. Haribo since expanded its operations, taking over many local confectionery manufacturers in countries all over the world. It began international expansion in the 1960s and entered American markets in the 1980s. As of 2013, it operated 16 factories which produce over 100 million gummi bears per day. In 1986, the confectionery company Haribo from Bonn bought the production and rights to the Maoam candy. [7] [8] [9] The Haribo Solingen factory in 2021 Goldbears [ edit ]

The company recently released a centennial Passport edition that samples from international varieties. It includes Goldbears, Starmix, Matador, Tagada, and Rotella. Stan Horaczek SHARE I can say with scientific accuracy that consuming corn syrup in any large volume (say half a bag of gummies), makes my body switch into insulin production overdrive to deal with the corn syrup. The end result is two to three hours later I actually develop low glucose levels. This indicates that my body is so sensitive to corn syrup that it over produces insulin and I run out of glucose to to deal with it as it has been pushed to my urine and my sugar drop below normal levels. Riegel debuted his gummy prototype, dubbed the Dancing Bear, or Tanzbären in German, in 1922. Larger and slimmer than modern gummy bears, the Tanzbären’s shape was reportedly inspired by the real dancing bears that once entertained children at festivals across Europe.

In the U.S., Haribo Goldbears come in five flavors: strawberry, raspberry, pineapple, lemon and orange. You can try this yourself with a simple Coke. Get a couple from the American market and couple from the Mexican market made from sugar instead and slam 1-2 down after lunch one day and repeat the test the next on the other version a different day. Confectionery was not part of the industry that was considered important for the German government at that time,” he says. “These people [mainly had to] work in coal mines and in other industries that were considered critical for the country.”

It might seem unusual to think of intellectual property in the framework of something as colourful as candy. But believe it or not, it is no less problematic. The bear character is something cute and loved by children,” says Bahlmann. “... The idea was not to [make] sweets without a certain shape.” Instead, Riegel wanted to give his candy a face and a personality.

We know the stories of today [of] Apple [starting] in a garage, and at that time [Haribo] was a little bit like that,” says Christian Bahlmann, Haribo’s senior vice president of corporate communications. “[Riegel had] the will to do something different, to do something on his own, and to start with very few opportunities ... and very [little] money.” In the 102 years since its founding, Haribo has attracted its fair share of criticism. At the turn of the millennium, the company declined to join Remembrance, Responsibility and the Future, a foundation established to compensate individuals—including civilians, prisoners of war and concentration camp inmates— forced to work for German companies during World War II. In a 2000 statement to German newspaper Tagesspiegel, Haribo refuted claims that it had relied on forced labor under the Nazi regime, adding, “There is no doubt about the suffering that existed but that cannot be righted now.” Haribo Goldbear gummies are now one of the top-selling candies in the world, spawning dozens of copycats and filling hundreds of fingerprint-smudged waiting-room jars. The company has grown out of Riegel’s home city of Bonn with 16 factories across Europe, Asia, Australia, and South America. It’s slated to break ground on its first US production facility in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, in fall or winter.
