About this deal

The story explored relationships between families and the struggle of having to make impossible decisions. It took me awhile to get into this book, but towards the middle of the book it really picked up and the pacing was perfect. The author made all the characters such shitty people that I’m not sure how we are supposed to feel towards them.

I was trying to wait to read this book closer to pub date… like in 2023… but I couldn’t contain my excitement and I devoured this! She visits from time to time but her relationships with her father, stepmother Sheryl and half sister Bailey have never moved much beyond polite and cordial. We celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stories, traditions and living cultures; and we pay our respects to Elders past and present. Author Mallery has created a delightful story of friendship between three women that also offers a variety of love stories as they fall in love, make mistakes, and figure out how to be the best—albeit still flawed—versions of themselves.

When Wren realises her fiance is in love with someone else, she thinks her heart will never recover. She creates stories which are stunningly evocative and characters that you fall in love with yourself.Wren decides to visit her father and stepfamily on their farm in Indiana after her fiancé falls in love with someone else. I have never so aggressively decided not to finish a book but 160-ish pages in this book (and my anger towards it) became too much.

She has written fifteen novels, a three-part spin-off for young adults and a collection of short stories. Wren is living in England, on the precipice of starting her life--engaged to the man she loves, only to discover her fiancé loves his assistant. thank you so much to penguin cornerstone for this arc via netgalley in exchange for an honest review!Despite the better option right in front of her, an unexpected complication forces Lily to cut ties with Atlas, confront Ryle, and try to end the cycle of abuse before it’s too late. I’m happy that this was so much more than a recovery from a broken heart as it gave Wren texture and layers. I mean they interact but Wren is feral for Anders and for most of the book it’s one sided, so the strength (or desperation) this woman has is beyond me. Like always, I flew through the pages and waited for Wren and Anders to finally admit their feelings for each other.

I loved the dynamics of these characters, from feeling on the outside, to being engulfed by so much love. Lily marries Ryle hoping the good will outweigh the bad, and the mother-daughter dynamics evolve beautifully as Lily reflects on her childhood with fresh eyes. And the plot is a touching tale of family, friendship, self-discovery, happiness, heartbreak, taking chances, growth, healing, revelations, tender moments, light drama, selflessness, romance, and new beginnings. It strains credulity that the small community wouldn't already know Anders's secret, making the reveal both unbelievable and jarring. This is the first book I’ve read by this author and even though I rarely read books that are slow burns, i enjoyed this one.
