About this deal

Boasting 3,200 ANSI Lumens high brightness, the PX701-4K projects consistent bright and clear images for you to spontaneously enjoy gaming and sports, anytime, or anywhere. On the top side, exactly above the lens, we find the controls for the zoom which gives the projector a 1.1x optical zoom and also lens focus. One thing to keep in mind is that the projector is missing any lens shifting so initial placement is made harder by this fact especially if you don’t have enough space to move the projector around. Note that there's also a Dynamic Eco mode, which reduces the image brightness and power consumption by varying amounts depending on the image content. After calibration, the final measured brightness for peak white with HDR input was significantly higher than for SDR, at 246.7 nits (72.01 ft-L). The measured color volume was 53.3% Rec.709 (35.8% of the DCI-P3 wide color gamut), an improvement on the pre-calibration measurement. The calibrated SDR Movie mode delivered an even larger color volume, at 82.8% Rec.709 (56.1% DCI-P3).

What is particularly interesting is that ViewSonic has added the ability to project the image on a curvy surface with the help of their Projector Warping Tool. This way the distorted image can be perfectly shaped through multiple point adjustments, even when projected on a spherical shape, a cylinder or other non straight surfaces. Compromise no more. Immerse yourself in over-100” stunning audiovisuals with flexible installation and effortless transportation which saves time, manpower and money. Like most projectors in this price range—including the BenQ TH585 and HT2150ST—the PX701HD offers only one 3D picture mode and works with DLP-link glasses only. I didn't see any crosstalk in my tests and noticed only minor 3D-related motion artifacts. The projector is also missing a dynamic iris that could potentially help here so the problem becomes even more apparent. The Dynamic Eco mode does act in a similar fashion but it is not as efficient as a true dynamic iris so the problem cannot be fixed even with this option. Digital connection for the transmission of picture & sound. Necessary for high-resolution picture quality (HDTV). Since HDMI 1.4 (High Speed) suitable for transmission of 3D content in Full HD. For high-resolution picture quality in UHD, 4K or HDR, the connection via HDMI 2.0a and higher is suitable. HDMI 2.1 or higher should be used from 120Hz refresh rate in 4K. Even in Movie mode, though, I felt the need to adjust the color for watching movies. Straight out of the box, blue skies turned just turquoise enough for me to consider the shift bothersome. However, thanks to the color management system's settings for adjusting hue, saturation, and gain separately for each primary and secondary color, it was easy to fix the problem. I brought blue skies into a realistic range without creating issues with other colors simply by adjusting the Hue setting for Cyan. Other settings include brightness, contrast, gamma, and Brilliant Color, which is common on DLP projectors. Typically, lowering the Brilliant Color setting will lower brightness while improving color accuracy. With the PX701HD, however, changing the setting in Movie mode lowered the brightness without any significant effect on color. I was able to improve color accuracy for primary and secondary colors significantly, bringing three to Delta E's of 3.5 or below, and two of those well below 3. The other three ranged between 6.3 and 12.3.

The projector is really simple. It focuses entirely on its image performance and so there are no extras or other features available. The on-board sound is enough for casual use and given the low cost nature of the unit we would say that it’s good enough for what you pay for.

ViewSonic PX701-4K

Although we were not expecting from the PX701-4K to reach uncanny levels of quality, we were hoping that such a unit that aims to more casual users that are not very much into calibrations, to offer better out of the box performance. This was not the case and the problems we saw, although can certainly improve, you needs to dig deep into the menu settings and know what to do to make things look better. Which we don’t think many will be willing to do. To enable 5 ms ultrafast input, turn it on in the advanced settings and make sure the input content is done at a 240 Hz refresh rate. If activated, the highest resolution supported is 1080p. With default settings many primary and secondary colors displayed high Delta Es values, with many of them in double digit numbers, and although many may find the end result acceptable there is vast room for improvement if you are willing to spend the time with the calibration settings. Apple's AirPlay technology is used for wireless transmission of content, such as music and videos, from iOS and Mac devices. These can also be receiver devices such as speakers, AV receivers and stereo systems or TVs. Streaming also works from an iOS device to a matching receiver. The protocol developed by Apple can also be licensed by other manufacturers. Image quality with default settings is usable, but even the picture mode with the best color accuracy can benefit from a little tweaking. Brightest mode was noticeably shifted toward a greenish-blue. Blue shifts tend to be less distracting that the green bias in most projectors' brightest modes, but the shift in this case was enough to make the lips in a closeup of a face look like the actor had been swimming for too long in cold water. So while Brightest mode is more usable than the Bright mode of many projectors, it's still best reserved for occasional use.

Colors in scenes I'm familiar with, from flesh tones, to the vibrant colors throughout La La Land, to the water, sky, and pastel-colored buildings James Bond passes on his way to his hotel in Casino Royale, looked like I expect them to. And in Hummingbirds Jewelled Messengers, a documentary on South American hummingbirds narrated by David Attenborough, the PX701-4K delivered both stunningly luminescent color for the hummingbirds and breathtaking views of the environment, from foggy rainforest to close up views of hummingbirds feasting on the nectar of vibrant-colored flowers. The PX701-4K was able to deliver vibrant colors of the hummingbirds and surrounding environment in the Hummingbirds: Jeweled Messengers documentary. (Photo Credit: Free Spirit Films) What we don’t like is that once again we see ViewSonic advertise this as a true 4K resolution projector which could not be more far from the truth. When you have such a proven technology that can produce so good results at a fraction of the cost of native 4K chips why to misinform the consumers in such a way? This gives both this technology and the manufacturers a bad name for no reason. For HDR input none of the HDR modes offered good color accuracy with default settings. I measured double digit Delta Es for at least two of the six primary and secondary colors in all five modes, while the smallest error in any mode was 4.4. However the color was suitably neutral. Subjectively, most people would consider the color accuracy good enough for casual viewing, even though colors were off by enough to see the difference in scenes I'm familiar with. Overall the PX701-4K looks and feels very ViewSonic. It is not the most premium of quality but considering the price you shouldn’t expect anything fancy. Video Quality Technology used

In general if you are considering a 4K projector but you are unsure about going for a pixel shifting unit we would say that its main strength is offering very close image sharpness to a native 4K model but at a fraction of the cost. So if you are worried about your budget, a pixel shifter is ideal and you get a lot of value for money. And the PX701-4K is no different as its image quality in terms of details and clarity is up there with the rest of them. In terms of contrast ratio ViewSonic is rating the projector at 12,000:1 ratio which is more or less the theoretical number you would expect from a projector of this caliber but don’t give too much attention to this number as we have seen manufacturers use a lot of different factors to give numbers that have no connection to reality. Powerful warping, automatic V-Keystone, H / V-Keystone and 4-corner adjustment make setting up a screen up to 300 ”on any surface easier than ever. In addition, there is the energy-efficient 20,000 hour lamp life, which makes lowering the total cost of ownership even more affordable. Whether on the side table in the living room, in the bedroom or at any other location of your choice, the projector delivers perfectly formed images with extensive H / V keystone and 4-corner adjustment options.Color Modes. The PX701-4K offers separate sets of color modes for SDR, HDR10, and HLG input using the same names for each set, but letting you customize each version separately. For each set, there are five presets and two User modes. As for the lens that is being used, the PX701-4K has a throw ratio of 1.5-1.65. In terms of size the unit can project a 30″ ~ 300″ diagonal image but as we mentioned above the projector is missing any lens shifting and if you combine that with the relatively small 1.1x zoom you don’t have many options when installing it.
