About this deal

This cute and catchy story combines three great elements: vehicles, physical comedy, and a repeating storyline. And wow, is my son Luke ever obsessed with it. During luncheon—which was excellent, of course, as everything at Toad Hall always was—the Toad simply let himself go. Disregarding the Rat, he proceeded to play upon the inexperienced Mole as on a harp. Naturally a voluble animal, and always mastered by his imagination, he painted the prospects of the trip and the joys of the open life and the roadside in such glowing colours that the Mole could hardly sit in his chair for excitement. Somehow, it soon seemed taken for granted by all three of them that the trip was a settled thing; and the Rat, though still unconvinced in his mind, allowed his good-nature to over-ride his personal objections. He could not bear to disappoint his two friends, who were already deep in schemes and anticipations, planning out each day's separate occupation for several weeks ahead.

Glorious, stirring sight!' murmured Toad, never offering to move. 'The poetry of motion! The REAL way to travel! The ONLY way to travel! Here to-day—in next week to-morrow! Villages skipped, towns and cities jumped—always somebody else's horizon! O bliss! O poop-poop! O my! O my!'Rpt. in Lee, Michelle (2009). Poetry Criticism (subscription required). Vol. 95. Detroit: Gale. Literature Resource Center. Web. 13 Apr. 2015. ISBN 9781414451848. The male is, of course, trying to optimise his chances of fertilising the eggs released by ‘his’ female, although once in the lake other males will compete aggressively for the females. Single females arrive towards the end of the spawning migration, very plump and ready to spawn.Although toads dominate the spawning migration to this particular lake, good numbers of frogs and smooth (or common) newts are also collected by the volunteers from the barrier. As with the toads, numbers fluctuate considerably from year to year, but in most years around 500 frogs and 300 newts are helped across the road. The Rat saw what was passing in his mind, and wavered. He hated disappointing people, and he was fond of the Mole, and would do almost anything to oblige him. Toad was watching both of them closely. John P Sumpter FRSB is a research professor within the Division of Environmental Sciences, Department of Life Sciences, Brunel University London. Mild, damp nights are reasonably unusual in February and March, so there are relatively few busy nights each season. On many nights not a single toad is collected, it being just too cold for an ectothermic (cold-blooded) animal to move. Then, on just a few nights each year, huge numbers can be seen (see figure 2 and 3, below). For example, on the busiest night in 2019, 20 volunteers carried 1,754 toads across the road. On two nights in the last 20 years that number has exceeded 2,000. In most years over 50% of all the toads are collected on just four or five evenings. It takes quite a few hours and many volunteers to collect so many toads.

A home-renovation project is interrupted by a family of wrens, allowing a young girl an up-close glimpse of nature. Maher, Paul Jr. Kerouac: The Definitive Biography. Lanham, Md.: Taylor Trade Publishing, 1994, 317. I am a biologist and wildlife enthusiast, but in 1988 had only a superficial knowledge of toad behaviour (my particular interest was wildlife sounds and sound recording). I was aware though that toads spend most of their life on dry land but must return to the water in spring to spawn. Sadly for the toads, roads often cut between traditional breeding lakes and the areas of dry land used for feeding and hibernating during the rest of the year. O'Hagan, Sean (August 5, 2007). He must be a very nice animal,' observed the Mole, as he got into the boat and took the sculls, while the Rat settled himself comfortably in the stern. Volunteer conservation groups across Europe are estimated to have moved millions of toads, and have helped provide data that shows large-scale and long-term declines in the common toad[ 6]. Many populations have declined in each decade since the 1980s to the extent that this common species now almost qualifies for International Union for the Conservation of Nature red-listing. Kerouac's writing style has attracted the attention of critics. On the Road has been considered by Tim Hunt to be a transitional phase between the traditional narrative structure of The Town and the City (1951) and the "wild form" of his later books like Visions of Cody (1972). [26] Kerouac's own explanation of his style in "Essentials of Spontaneous Prose" (1953) is that his writing is like the Impressionist painters who sought to create art through direct observation. Matt Theado feels he endeavored to present a raw version of truth which did not lend itself to the traditional process of revision and rewriting but rather the emotionally charged practice of the spontaneity he pursued. [27] Theado argues that the personal nature of the text helps foster a direct link between Kerouac and the reader; that his casual diction and very relaxed syntax was an intentional attempt to depict events as they happened and to convey all of the energy and emotion of the experiences. [27] Music in On the Road [ edit ] As well as helping the toads directly, I hope that our project provides a useful introduction to practical wildlife conservation. We also try and raise awareness by having exhibits at local events and giving talks to schools and other organisations. Johnston, Allan (Spring 2005).
