As an English speaker, it is rather amusing to imagine the denizens of the wizarding world waving around their loaves of bread, but it is simply a good translation that makes perfect sense in the French language. The process of translating magical objects in Harry Potter must have been rather fun as you can really use your imagination to convey the meaning and purpose of these objects. In my opinion Hagrid’s accent gives him a soft, gentler side – perhaps it implies he’s a bit simple, more ‘brawn over brains’ but as an English speaker it makes me warm to Hagrid – maybe this is something a French person would interpret differently. While the 1st prints look a lot like the other pre-movie font books, there are few things to help identify it.The comments I have about the translation are mainly about the translation of character, thing, and place names. But it would have lost that endearing quality of the name, since to the French it would have been gibberish. Snape’s name – which in the English has no particular allusion except perhaps the unpleasant ‘sn’ sound associated with words like snide, snail, snap, snake, snare – is now an explicit characterisation. She suggests that he didn’t want to draw attention to the fact that British students are in charge of their own discipline. Not just because readers wouldn’t understand the concepts, but so the story reflected proper French values.
