Death spoke as though Signa were a child. As though she were a small, fragile thing that needed to be coddled” This book was so good! This was an enchanting and intriguing romantic fantasy about love, betrayal, power, and loyalty. Foxglove follows Signa as she solves a new mystery with the help of the Hawthornes and Death. During her journey to find the guilty person she meets Fate, Death's brother and she discovers several secrets along the way. Will Signa be able to solve the mystery before time runs out or will her future be changed forever? While I hope that these editions will make it to the shelves, 𝗽𝗿𝗲-𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗲𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Both are limited and when we run out, the publisher won’t be printing more! The writing was beautiful. Death was hot. The voice the audiobook narrator did for Death was also hot. I loved Signa, though she was a bit naive at times. Death was hot. The side characters were fully fleshed out and I cared for them deeply. Death was ho- fine, I'll shut up. The other aspect of this story that can’t go without discussion is the fantasy element. Sigma can see Death, and she also begins to realize early on that when she’s in the space between the living and the dead, she also has his powers. This realization comes at the beginning of the book and is one of the many puzzle pieces that come together to give us a gripping finale. At two thirds through the book, the characters think they have solved the mystery and will save Blythe. As a reader with a chunk of book left in front of us, we know that can’t possibly be the case, and the spiral that comes through the rest of the story is tough to put down. As Sigma grows into her powers and becomes closer to Death than she ever thought possible, the story becomes more addictive.

Orphaned as a baby, nineteen-year-old Signa has been raised by a string of guardians, each more interested in her wealth than her wellbeing – and each has met an untimely end. Her remaining relatives are the elusive Hawthornes, an eccentric family living at Thorn Grove, an estate both glittering and gloomy. It's also never a fun read when characters you've grown fond of and are expecting to see more of are suddenly relegated to the sidelines as supporting characters. I never fathomed that Blythe would become a major player in the narrative and when she did, I found myself rather annoyed by her perspective. I understand that she was a vital player in what was to unfold in this story, but it felt like it dominated too much importance; and honestly, that bored me. Anyone who says this is good is straight up lying. This book singlehandedly cured my “surely if the cover is drop dead gorgeous it can’t be that bad” delusion. And do not get me started on that attempt at a cliffhanger/twist in the epilogue. I am not falling for that again!!!! I have already seen Signa try to solve a murder mystery once and was NOT impressed. They say that all is fair in love and war. I have built my trench and brought my rifles, and I have no intention of retreating." there’s a scene where Signa and Death are cloaked and in the same room as Blythe. they can see her but she can’t see them. Blythe gets very emotional when she finds some damning evidence about her family, and suddenly the room starts to grow vines and moss and flowers, all this energy bursts and fills the room. and i was like “see! she is Life!” Signa is no ordinary girl, a shadow has followed her all her life, causing her heartache and isolation. This shadow has a name, he is Death. When an opportunity arises to fulfill Signa's dream of being part of a family and finding companionship, it's threatened by a strange illness and foul play and she must finally confront Death and her unusual connection to him to solve the mystery and her loved ones.

if there had been parts written to direct me toward Signa then, sure. it would be more convincing… but it was just so clearly Blythe is was kinda insulting to be told over and over again that it was Signa. at least TRY??! at least try and weave the clues to make it look like it could be Signa rather than Death and Signa just assuming it’s her. so many instances, the story had no substance and relied on weak structuring like this to carry the story. When it becomes clear to Signa that Lilianne didn't die of natural causes an unexpected murder mystery begins to unfold. This is made significantly more interesting by the fact that Signa gets the support of her old friend, Death, as she tries to solve it.

He is ALWAYS described in a menacing way looming and towering over the mc. Read these following quotes knowing this is a grown man talking to a barely legal naive orphaned girl who he met when she was an actual infant and watched her growing up and then ends up as her love interest (including rather graphic sexual acts):

See a Problem?

I loved the final twist and cliffhanger! I’m absolutely looking forward to read the second book! I had amazing reading time! The New York Times bestselling author of All the Stars and Teeth brings to life a highly romantic, Gothic-infused world of wealth, desire, and betrayal.  I really wanted to love this book, but I'm afraid it didn't quite hit that mark with me. Belladonna is by no means a bad book, and it's completely on trend with it's cover art and thematic content. In fact, this will be a huge hit with many readers, and I'm excited to see its reception amongst the YA crowd as it releases. The aspects that didn't work for me will be favorite qualities of another reader, and that's what makes this hobby such a beautiful experience. I received a copy of this book via NetGalley (thank you Little, Brown Books for Young Readers). All thoughts and opinions are my own. The voice was not what she expected. It wasn't ice, nor gravel, but the sound of water in a meadow, slipping over her skin and inviting her in for a midnight swim.
