Hilarious comic characters in Colon and Nobby (IIRC, Colon had appeared in earlier novel as a very minor character, I forget which one). I loved the dialogues between them, especially when arguing who should rescue Carrot from drowning. The Watch is generally regarded as a bunch of incompetents who walk around ringing their bells without accomplishing anything, which is largely accurate. Carrot's arrival changes this; Whereas the existing officers are either cynical, incompetent, mildly crooked or all three, Carrot is honest, straightforward and idealistic. Colon, Nobby Nobbs, & Carrot Ironfounderson) are hilarious when stumbling through Ankh-Morpork that is currently beset by a gigantic fire-spitting dragon. But of course there were rules. Everyone knew there were rules. They just had to hope like Hell that the gods knew the rules, too.
