About this deal

On larger branches and/or the trunk: Cankers are perennial, with the affected area covered with dead bark that sometimes shows concentric rings indicating periods of active spread. If it turns out that the tree is cropping well, restrict the pruning to cutting out dead wood and crossing branches in the first year. You mention your tree is conical shaped which suggests that it could be one of the dwarfer varieties and be far less troublesome. I have reduced its size over a four year period, but now I am stuck with one trunk that has only two fruiting branches above ladder height.

There is no energy left to create productive fruiting wood as a replacement for older non-productive branches. Perennial cankers develop raised edges as the tree’s bark attempts to grow back over the exposed area. Second, I need to be able to prune these trees myself, and am trying to take this tree permanently lower overall by about 12-18 inches. I am sure that your tree will not completely die but any die back on the stems and branches will need to cut back during the summer months.

Your dwarf Cherry Tree Tabitha is a deciduous tree and if left outside will produce new leaves in the Springtime but by bringing your Cherry Tree indoors you have 'forced' your tree to come into leaf early and you will now need to keep your tree in a very light but cool position to avoid the shoots becoming drawn and etiolated and in the Spring - weather conditions permitting - placing your tree outside again. I have a very large flowering cherry tree - about 40ft high - which is to be thinned and have the crown lifted.

The following plants are particularly prone to bleeding, so pruning at the correct time will help prevent it. I would like to remove that trunk and would be left with a more graceful single trunk with multiple fruiting branches. The sap of some trees and shrubs, such as grape vines, birch and walnut trees, begins to rise very early. These plants are particularly vulnerable to bleeding if pruned in mid- to late winter or early spring, as the rising sap spills out from the pruning cut. On small branches and fruiting spurs: The infection may girdle the stem and kill it in a single season.

If we don’t take care of ourselves and never go outside if and when we can, we gradually accumulate all sorts of problems too. I feel that you need to get a second opinion from a Tree Surgeon but, I personally, would be quite worried having a tree so close to the house wall. We have now noticed a vertical crack on the side wall of our garage - could this possibly be caused by the tree? I would use a soil base compost - John Innes No 3 - and mix with the No 3 compost approximately 25% of multipurpose compost. If you have any dead branches on your Cherry Tree these will need to be pruned back to live wood and the time for pruning is during the summer period. If looked after well, trees will continue to crop year after year, even when the trees are 30 to 40 years old.
