Much later in her reign she would be used by more callow prime ministers too: by David Cameron to warn obliquely against Scottish independence during the 2014 referendum campaign and more shamelessly by Johnson during the parliamentary Brexit debates of 2019 to prorogue parliament, a manoeuvre condemned as unlawful by the supreme court. In neither of these decisions was the Queen culpable, being required to act on advice from prime ministers, and the obloquy ultimately fell on them. On September 9, 2015, she surpassed her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria as Britain’s longest-ruling monarch, who reigned for 63 years. From there she made the first of her famous radio broadcasts in 1940, with this particular speech reassuring the children of Britain who had been evacuated from their homes and families.
