About this deal

The author has a record as an unreliable witness - she was censured by MPs for making groundless claims against a Channel 4 documentary about poverty. Dorries succeeds only in publishing what can only be described as an almost religious tome in worship of Boris Johnson; a man she would have us believe has only virtuous faults and who is driven by public service. When Boris Johnson came to power in 2019, he did so with the largest Conservative majority since Margaret Thatcher.

On the other, they all sound the same, making the same convoluted points at similar length, explaining the same basic things about Westminster to her in a way that suggests that, if they are real, they think Dorries is an idiot. Each person I interviewed … told me the same thing, that I was uncovering something dark and deeply undemocratic”. I can imagine the sense of horror experienced by Nadine when, after publishing this book, it neither entered the best seller lists nor led to the downfall of any of the villains she lays into.

This book highlights the obsessive pursuit of power by a small group of people within the Conservative Party and the telling of the story is damming! Most important, however, is Dr No, the shadowy figure who has been pulling the strings in Westminster for as long as anyone can remember, according to Dorries. I have not been able to read all of it – because what I have read have made me realise it is total, utter, ridiculous, garbage! She says the group has its origins in the Federation of Conservative Students, an organisation closed down in 1986 by then party chairman Norman Tebbit because of its radical views and occasionally raucous behaviour. The Times noted that Dorries "faced significant legal hurdles in publishing", not least around this allegation. Then I read ND's book and she talks to many people including ex PMs (Iain Duncan Smith) who advise her that the main decisions are taken by the "movement" being lead by Red Throat, Dr No, Dougie Smith (non of them elected members) who then in turn advise Richi Sunak.

After his dramatic rise to power in the summer of 2019 amid the Brexit deadlock, Boris Johnson presided over the most turbulent period of British history in living memory. There is no truth in the sex dossier that circulated about Liz Truss before her election – “just ridiculous”.I came away thinking that while these people still pull the strings in the Conservative Party, they will never receive my vote, as it will be wasted on people who care little about carrying out manifesto pledges.

This behaviour if it is as prevalent as ND has been advised then it undermines our whole democracy and British people deserve better. I thought Conservative MPs fired him because he was so embarrassingly useless at the job that some of them nicknamed him In Deep Shit. For the protection of herself and her “sources”, Nads meets them at venues carefully selected to be discreet, such as a Mayfair club and a Westminster pub. They’re interspersed with long, dramatic conversations between Dorries and various unnamed sources who all seemingly share her thesis, several of whom have a habit of speaking like characters in a bad spy novel. when Britain was engulfed by a series of crises that will define its place in the world for decades to come.
