About this deal

The print is reasonable, despite some scratching and the occasional bleaching that seems to be a feature of Renown releases. We are aware that there are films on the site that were added when the criteria for the inclusion of locations was very different from today and, as a result, there may be scenes missing from some productions. American William Sylvester is ebullient as Jimmy and, with his mid-Atlantic accent, could well have made an excellent Saint.

An Army officer (William Sylvester) and Carol (Mary Germaine) must solve the murder of a blackmailer or be charged themselves. Four stars for this one, although I found it cosy rather than scarey, right down to the music - pure 1950s BBC Home Service!

Unusually, the lead female role - played here by Mary Germaine - has a much more substantial role in this mystery as they attempt to identify the murderer. A hitchhiker becomes a murder suspect after he accepts a ride from a person who kills a blackmailer. Images submitted must be in Landscape orientation, as would be seen on the cinema screen, not Portrait.

When Carol gives Markham a cheque, he demands that Carol and Jim remain at the house until the cheque clears. A great little British Crime Drama shot in just Ten days, tracing the activities of the gang of crooks whose long run of successful coups has the police in a panic. An Army officer (William Sylvester) and Carol (Mary Germaine) must solve the murder of a blackmailer or be charged themselves in this British crime drama directed by Maurice Elvey. Maurice Elvey was the most prolific director in British cinema history, making over 300 features after his debut in 1913. We enjoyed it from a film history point of view, and sat through until the end, despite a terrible print and even worse sound quality.

Less complicated than Agatha Christie and is a lighthearted contrast with the depressing films noirs of the same period. House of Blackmail is a 1953 British second feature [1] drama film directed by Maurice Elvey and starring Mary Germaine, William Sylvester and Alexander Gauge. An army officer (William Sylvester) aids a girl (Mary Germaine) trying to extricate her brother from a blackmailer's clutches. The investigation reveals numerous possible suspects leading the couple to try and find the real killer themselves. This proves to be a ride he'll never forget, when the blackmailer is killed by high-tension wires and the rider is accused of the crime. Mary Germaine hires William Sylvester to accompany her to a rendezvous at a blackmailer's country house even though she suspects he may be a convict on the run in this low-budget B-movie that punches above its weight in the early stages before collapsing under the weight of expectation. The film is quite fast paced and benefits from having humour throughout, although there isn’t really much tension and the actual investigation is a bit laborious.
