The wine is made from grapes from the finest vineyards in Upper Douro and is aged for five years in oak casks before being bottled. Under John Henry Smithes, Cockburn’s was instrumental in recovering Touriga Nacional from almost certain extinction, a grape variety that is fundamental to Vintage Port.

The earliest harvest on record in 2017 followed a growing season of drought and high temperatures, the resultant wines being very concentrated with good structure resulting in the first back-to-back declaration with 2016 for many years. Special Reserve is in its element served with rich dark chocolate desserts, fruit tarts, berry or nutty puds and complements most cheeses incredibly well. The Cockburn's Vintage Port Wines are produced only with the best wines, of years considered exceptional and aged in wooden casks and bottled without any filtering or clarification. In 1969, with the launch of the Special Reserve, the company successfully planted the previously ignored Touriga Nacional in large numbers. Cockburn's declared 2015 as a Vintage year, launching a magnificent Port Wine that simultaneously marks the bicentenary of the brand, which was founded in 1815.The General Wine Company sources wines from all over the world, but with a particular focus on small, independent producers. In 2016 the Portuguese Minister for Tourism opened the new visitor centre at the Cockburn's Port Cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, Porto. Late Bottled Vintage 2016: With a deep-colored center and a garnet rim, this port is a sure crowd puller and is meant to be enjoyed with others. On the nose Cockburn’s Fine Ruby show’s fresh and appealing red fruit aromas such as red cherry and raspberry. On the palate it's sweet, well rounded, medium length and with luscious red berry flavours leading to a distinctive peppery finish.

Fine Ruby pairs well with blue veined cheeses, rich chocolate desserts - especially with raspberry sauce - or simply squares of dark chocolate and toasted walnuts. Their different business approach and an uncompromising attitude towards tradition have helped them achieve success in port making. The concentrated wines of 1991 are still for keeping, though Ports from the lighter houses are just beginning to emerge. Cockburn’s Fine Ruby can be enjoyed on its own but it complements after dinner deserts of chocolate or cheese.
