About this deal

The sensor needs to be large enough so that the quality of the photos can be used in exhibitions and books. No problem here with its APS-C sensor and 16 megapixels to work with. It isn't a "flash" capture like the leaf shutter, it's effectively a rolling slit just like a focal plane. Therefore pictures with motion may look bent. You’ve heard me mention the Fujifilm image processing, so it’s a good time to pause and look at the Film Simulations and effects available on the X70. With the same sensor and processor as the XT models, it’s no surprise to find the same options.

If you’ve made it to the end of this review, you’ll have realised that my feelings about this camera are very positive. One of the biggest differences between the X100T and the X70, and probably the main reason someone would switch from the former to the latter, is the fixed 18.5mm lens (28mm equivalent on 35mm format). It is officially the third premium compact with an APS-C sensor to feature a 28mm equivalent lens, following the Ricoh GR/II and the Nikon Coolpix A. The 18.5mm lens (28mm field of view) The tiny "Play" button itself is not marked. The Play icon instead is printed next to it on the camera body, so you may be led to press the body instead of the button in the dark. To save space, weight and cost, there’s no built-in viewfinder, but the X70 becomes the first model in the X-series to feature a screen that not only tilts all the way up to face the subject for selfies, but with a touch-sensitive panel too. The hotshoe can also accommodate an optional optical viewfinder accessory that indicates coverage for both the standard 28mm and converted 21mm focal lengths. Completing the specification are built-in Wifi, a fixed flash, 1080p video at 24, 25, 30, 50 or 60p, and a ton of manual controls including a shutter dial, customizable lens ring and eight function buttons. If you want X-series quality in the smallest possible body, the X70 is for you and likely to be a popular companion for owners of larger X-bodies. Continuous AF in movie mode is fairly reactive but the movement of the lens elements as they change from one focus point to another is quite audible and will surface in the audio of your recorded footage in a quiet setting.

Keep in mind that there isn’t any stabilisation (optical, sensor or software) so your hand-held footage may be shaky. The profile of the fixed 18mm F/2.8 lens is around 12mm. Being a true Fujifilm lens, they have managed to squeeze both an aperture dial and a manual focus ring onto this space. The only limitation concerns the bokeh rendering, which can become unpleasant at shutter speeds faster than 1/1000s at f/2.8. This is due to the leaf shutter failing to cover the large aperture fast enough. The X100T has a built-in ND filter (3 Ev equivalent) that counteracts the issue by reducing the shutter speed but unfortunately, the X70 has no such benefit. The high frame rate options with the DRIVE button allowing shooting at up to 8 FPS for up to 10 continuous frames. Oh, they don’t make it anymore.’ But there were a few to be found second hand. I put one in the basket, parted with the cash, and waited. Impatiently.

Sadly the screen data doesn't rotate as an iPhone does as you hold the camera upside down or vertically. With the Fujifilm X70, this includes Provia, Velvia, Astia, Classic Chrome, Pro Negative Hi, Pro Negative Low and a range of Monochrome variables. The Canon T6 was shot with its kit 18-55mm IS II at 18mm, f/10 at 1/250 at Auto ISO 100. It was set to Standard Picture Style with +4 saturation for the most vivid colors, and its sharpening was cranked to 7 (the maximum) which explains its over-sharpened look. The XF10 can take great images, but operational quirks significantly dull the experience of shooting with it. The camera can shoot in Full HD at 60p with continuous recording up to approximately 14 minutes, and works best with Class 10 SD card or higher. Any one of the Film Simulation Modes can be applied when you record. It would be nice if you could access the higher ISO sensitivities and other JPG-only functions without having to switch to JPG mode in the menu first The final Fujifilm accessory on offer was again a first-party product – it was a kit that provided Fujifilm X70 users with a leather half case (BLC-X70) for the camera to provide a little more protection and grip.
