About this deal

Its qualities actually give you more freedom to shoot. The wide exposure latitude and dynamic range, which to be fair most other consumer grade films have too, make it highly unlikely your results are going to be over or underexposed, even on a bright beach. Camera Leica M3 Lens ZEISS Biogon T* ZM 35mm f2 Film Fujifilm C200 EI200 Development Tetenal Colortec C-41 Scanner Reflecta ProScan 10T Flower Explosion A film that delivers high-quality colour renditions and moderate grain, Fujifilm 200 35mm film is the latest iteration of the world-famous Fujifilm C200.

Fujicolor C200 is Fujicolor 200 though, so you can take this as a review of both. For the remainder of it, I’ll be using the name C200 only, as that’s what I’ve shot. A film that delivers high-quality colour renditions and moderate grain, Fujifilm C200 is forgiving with highlights and known for providing reliable results across different lighting situations.

Clearer colors in the highlights and appropriately controlled color saturation in the shadows to allow rendering of subjects with a feeling of three-dimensional realism.

At this point I'm not sure if the cast is a normal C200 thing or not. Maybe the film didn't play well with my development technique. Other films haven't reported issues with it though. Maybe it's a normal C200 look. The cast appears stronger on more over-exposed shots so it could be something to do with that. It's not too strong and you can also fix it in post. Something to be aware of. Vivid skin tone reproduction with the world's highest color saturation equal to that of the current Velvia. Superb color tone depiction for rich color reproduction. Some of the things that make Fujicolor C200 an average film are the very same things that make it a good choice for your street photography. Now under artificial light this is amplified, so you can expect a strong warm color cast (if not using a color filter to change the white balance of course): Leica M6 | MS-Optics 35mm 1.4 Apoqualia | f/2.0 | Fuji 200 Leica M6 | MS-Optics 50mm 1.3 Slim | f/2.0 | Fuji 200 This review is based on two rolls of C200 - shot and developed. First was shot on a Pentax MZ-5 where I used the camera to do the light metering. About 50% was shot at ISO200 and the other 50% were shot at ISO100. The other roll was shot on Leica M3 with me being the light meter. I did use a light meter from the phone from time to time as well.

That ISO 200 rating is good too, freeing you up to shoot in slightly worse light than you could with the Industrial 100, or any ISO 100 film for that matter. Faithful reproduction of neutral grays over a wide exposure range from underexposure to overexposure. C200 is a C-41 color negative film. Fuji says that it's designed for "flexibility and ease of use". And that part is true. Consumer market films are more forgiving so you can over and under expose a decent amount and still get usable results. On the other hand - the colors might not be as nice and grain can be more noticeable. Now that I’ve heaped praise onto this inexpensive color film, I’m going to tell you that I prefer this film’s slightly slower brother, Fujicolor 100! (I’ve reviewed it twice, here and here.) But that film is hard to come by (it’s officially only available in Japan) and expensive when you do find it. For pennies a frame, it’s hard to beat Fujicolor 200!

While C200 does continue this trend, don’t be fooled into thinking it’ll present your sunny-at-the-time holiday memories as some gloomy alternate reality. What I got from my couple of rolls was certainly still vivid enough. It’s not like a JCH Street Pan 400, or a CineStill 800T, or a Kodak Ektachrome E100; all of which genuinely are special in their own ways, and are often used to shoot their own specialised kind of photography. Street, neon signs, and colourful inanimate objects respectively. So, what is Fujicolor C200? Well, first up, it’s Fujicolor 200. Second, it’s probably not a film for producing fine art with. But, in my opinion, it’s a pretty good budget film for when you’re just out there preserving memories. My biggest annoyance is with the pink / magenta color cast. Still not sure whether it's normal or not.

I think that’s the wrong way to look at it, though. I’m not saying it isn’t average, but I don’t think dismissing as such is the best way to think about it. Not when we could celebrate its averageness instead.
